ISO Master is an application for creating and modifying ISO9660 files (ISO images), which are easily digitally transportable exact images of data CDs and some DVDs.

    History

ISO Master was started by Andrew Smith as an open source (GPLv2) college course project in 2005. It was initially composed of bkisofs: a library for reading and writing ISO9660 files with RockRidge, Joliet, and El Torito extensions and a command-line-only user interface. A GTK+-based user interface was added in 2006.

The author considered the project "feature-complete" in 2007 and no major new features were added after that point.[2] But the project has received numerous contributions in the form of translations into other languages,[3] bug fixes from external contributors,[4] and packages for all Linux distributions that included a graphical user interface, including:

Community members have also created an ISO Master FreeBSD port[12] (package) and an ISO Master OpenBSD port.[13] This did not require code changes because the code was written following POSIX standards which both Linux and BSD follow.

While the Linux distribution of ISO Master was always licensed under the GPL version 2, a Windows version was available briefly in 2008 under a proprietary license. The Windows version is no longer distributed by the author [14] but a two-week demonstration version is still available via various archives such as CNET online.

    Reception

ISO Master has been reviewed in many forums, and has received generally positive reviews, including:

    Features

    ISO Master can:

    • Create an ISO image from scratch
    • Add or remove files and directories to/from a CD image
    • Create bootable CDs
    • Extract and insert EL Torito and floppy-emulation boot records
    • Read Nero image formatted files

ISO Master supports Rock Ridge and Joliet ISO 9660 standards which allows filenames on an ISO-formatted disk to have more than 8.3 characters (8 characters for the name plus 3 characters for the extension).
