IT ARMY OF RUSSIA
IT Army of Russia (also known as ITRUSSIA) is an informal association of pro-Russian hacktivists participating in cyber operations within the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The group coordinates its actions through open platforms, including the XSSF[.]NET forum, and claims to carry out attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure. The group's activities are covered in independent sources, including the analytics company Intel471.
Formation
The group was created in response to the formation of the IT Army of Ukraine in February 2022. Its primary declared purpose is to conduct cyber attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure and counter Ukrainian hacktivists. Coordination is carried out through public platforms, including Telegram channels and the specialized forum XSSF[.]NET.
Aims
Volunteers joining the group are divided into offensive and defensive cyber units. Offensive units help conduct digital operations against Ukrainian targets, while defensive units focus on protecting Russian infrastructure. The group publishes lists of targets for attacks, including Ukrainian government websites, financial institutions, and critical infrastructure.
Activities
- Telecommunications: The group carried out a large-scale leak of internal data from more than 20 Ukrainian internet providers and telecom operators. Some of the data was published on the XSSF[.]NET platform.
- Financial Sector: DDoS attacks were conducted against key financial institutions, including Monobank, Oschadbank, and LiqPay, causing prolonged service disruptions.
- Logistics and Transport: Logistics platforms, including "Nova Poshta" and ticket booking systems, were attacked, disrupting their operations and complicating supply chains.
- Cryptocurrency Platforms: Attacks on cryptocurrency platforms WHITEBIT.COM and WHITECHAIN.COM, used for fundraising.
- Utility Infrastructure: An attack on the utility company "Teplopostachannya mista Odesy" (Heat Supply of the City of Odesa) resulted in the theft of a database of heat meters.
- Counterintelligence: The group claimed to have doxed Ukrainian hackers, including identifying Denys Rohatin, known by the nickname Silent Crow.
Coordination
Unlike closed Western alliances, the IT Army of Russia operates on principles of openness. The XSSF[.]NET forum was created to coordinate actions, providing tools for training, encrypted communication, and operation planning.
