History
In 2010, the Region of Waterloo released it's Regional Transportation Master Plan Full Report, where it states that they plan to have a extensive iXpress network that includes 6 iXpress routes on major corridors in Waterloo Region.[1] At the time, iXpress consisted of only one route, which operated express service between Conestoga Mall and Ainslie St. Terminal via the Central Transit Corridor.
In 2011, high demand for a fast service to Forest Glen, Highland Hills Mall, and the 2 universities, the 201 Fisher-Hallman iXpress route was introduced, acting as an express service of the student-dominated route 12. It ran west from Laurier to University of Waterloo, then south on Fisher-Hallman Road to Forest Glen via Highland Hills Mall.[1]
The closure of Forest Glen and Highland Hills Mall after ION Launch resulted in the 201 being rerouted south to Conestoga College.
The second iXpress route would open in 2012, running in a crosstown fashion. It served both universities, Erb St. West, RIM Park, The Boardwalk, and Conestoga Mall via University Ave.
The third iXpress route serves as a fast connection between Kitchener and Cambridge, serving Conestoga College, Sportsworld, Hespeler Village, and Cambridge Centre.[2]
The fourth iXpress route runs between The Boardwalk and Ottawa/Lackner via Highland Rd East and Victoria St North, serving the Highland Hills, Victoria Hills, Downtown, and Victoria North.
The fifth iXpress route runs primarily on Ottawa St. between Sunrise Centre and Ottawa/Lackner, making important stops at the future Borden & Mill LRT stations, Downtown, and neighborhoods along Ottawa St.[3]
The sixth and final route, partially replaces the 52 route between Fairway and Ainslie St Terminal, and is extended to West Galt via Cedar Street.[2]
Future
In 2018, the Region of Waterloo released the 2018 Transportation Master Plan, called Moving Forward, which identifies and improves the region's transportation needs. On the Transit Service Enhancements' part, Grand River Transit will develop a all-day high-frequency bus network and iXpress network providing 10-minute service or better.[3]
Infrastructure
Infrastructure along the iXpress corridors include bus stop shelters which dedicated iXpress markings, next bus screens, and priority signaling at multiple intersections.
Select bus stops will have system map displays, bike lockers and bike racks.[2]
Buses on iXpress
Vehicles on the iXpress routes are mainly Nova Bus LFS's, but New Flyer Xcelsior's can be seen on iXpress routes during bus shortages or peak hours. In the future, Grand River Transit will operate Articulated buses on iXpress, primarily on 201 and 202.[4]

Routes in green are currently active routes, while routes in grey are defunct or discontinued.
