I Am Birmingham (also styled as IAmBirmingham) is an independent news media publisher based in the United Kingdom, aimed at people in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Founded in July 2009, I Am Birmingham is a news publisher with a focus on producing original media content and developing the journalism skills of individuals from underrepresented communities.[1][2]

Background

I Am Birmingham was launched in 2009 as a video platform highlighting news and events in and around Birmingham,[3] before developing into a multimedia news website primarily dedicated to written news complemented by photojournalism and video journalism.[4]

The website was originally published under the iambirmingham.net domain URL before transitioning to iambirmingham.co.uk.[5]

Journalist Adam Yosef is the founder and current editor-in-chief of I Am Birmingham.[6][7] The news publishing platform is co-owned by Yosef and corporate manager Ali Mohammed.[8] In 2014, Jack Kirby was briefly appointed editor of the news website.[9]

Content

I Am Birmingham's main output is news relating to communities in Birmingham and the West Midlands, with its website subdivided into categories including News, Community, Showbiz, Interviews, Politics, LGBT+, World and Education.

Alongside short form news article format, content on the website is presented as listicles, in-depth features, galleries and video reports.

The media publisher focuses on covering major calendar events in the West Midlands including cultural, religious and community highlights such as Birmingham Pride,[10] the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games[11] and political electoral campaigns impacting the region and city.

Coverage and audience

Original news content produced by I Am Birmingham has featured across national UK media publishers including BBC News,[12] ITV News,[13] The Guardian,[14] Metro UK,[15][16][17] The Mirror[18] and Huffington Post.[19][20][21]

The website has also published exclusive viral stories that have appeared in international publications such as The Washington Post,[22] BuzzFeed,[23] The Christian Science Monitor,[24] RAW Story,[25][26] News.com.au[27] and International Business Times.[28]

Several media publishers in the West Midlands cite I Am Birmingham as a news source for stories, including the Birmingham Mail,[29][30][31][32] and publications ranging from educational books to journals.[33][34]

I Am Birmingham works closely with news media groups representing marginalised communities, namely representing ethnic minority and LGBT communities. The website's content is regularly picked up by niche news publishers including Pink News,[35][36][37][38] The Forward[39] and The Express Tribune.[40]

Reach and engagement

I Am Birmingham has over 8 million views on the platform's YouTube channel.[41] The news outlet has 77,500 followers on its Twitter account, as of March 2022.[42]

In May 2018, the platform's Facebook page had over 250,000 video views, according to statistics on the website's media information.[43][needs update]
