Career[edit]
Ian Pannell began his career in journalism in 1991 as a reporter for BBC Radio Leicester, a local station. In 1994, he moved to London to work for BBC 5 Live, later moving to Radio 4 and reporting for their World at One, PM and World this Weekend programmes.
In 2001, following the fall of the Taliban, Pannell was the first foreign journalist to enter Kabul.[1] Soon thereafter, he moved into broadcast journalism, receiving his first foreign post as the BBC's Washington Correspondent in 2002 and reporting on the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election, among other stories.[5] In 2005, he received a new posting as the BBC's Middle East Correspondent, moving from Washington D.C. to Cairo. He covered conflicts including the 2006 Lebanon War[6] and the Iraq War.[7]
In 2008, he was posted to Afghanistan to cover the ongoing war.[1] Travelling with British, U.S. and NATO forces, he reported from the front lines of the conflict.[8]
In 2011, Pannell and his family returned to Washington D.C. but he remained focused on the Middle East, covering the emerging civil war in Syria.[1] In 2013, he was recognised for his work in Syria with an Emmy Award at the 34th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards for the documentary "Inside Syria's Uprising".[4] The same year he won a Peabody Award for his reporting in Syria, described as "without equal"[9]. He later received two more Emmy Awards for his reporting in Syria, in 2014, and coverage of the 2016 refugee crisis.
In 2017, Pannell left the BBC after 26 years to work for the U.S. network, ABC News, moving to London as their Senior Foreign Correspondent.[1] In this position he has covered the fight against ISIS[10], the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan[11] and the conflict in Ukraine.[12]
