The iba is a part of the F+U group which has been active in tertiary education for more than 30 years and was founded in 2006 by Hans-Dieter Sauer as a cooperation of the F+U Group and the BA Nordhessen. Universities of Cooperative Education (UCE) are institutions which only offer dual courses and are a fixed component of the german educational system.[2] The iba is the largest state-approved private UCE in Germany.[3]. In other countries the concept of UCE and dual study is known by the term Vocational University. The iba uses as dual study model the so called split-week model, each week, students spend 20 hours in class and work up to 20 hours at a partner company. [4]

Accreditation and state approval[edit]

The iba is a state-approved private university with its registered office in Darmstadt and a number of dependent locations across Germany. The legal basis is Hessian law which regulates the accreditation and the state-approval of universities of cooperative education. The state-approval of iba has been granted indefinitely. The iba is under supervision of the Hessian State Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts (HMWK).[5]

The degrees in Business Administration (Bachelor of Arts) and Engineering & Management (Bachelor of Engineering) are accredited by Zentrale Evaluations - und Akkreditierungsagentur Hannover (ZeVA).[6] The dual work/study programmes Social Pedagogy & Management (Bachelor of Arts) as well as Physiotherapy (Bachelor of Science) are accredited by Akkreditierung gGmbH Freiburg (AHPGS).[7] Bachelor degrees at a University of Cooperative Education in Hessen are a legal equivalent to any other Bachelor university degree.
