Catriona Gray wore a gold-and-orange dress created by Filipino fashion designer Mak Tumang during the preliminary round of Miss Universe 2018, which she was declared the winner.[1][2] The dress was later known as Ibong Adarna gown or Adarna gown due to its design that was inspired by the eponymous magical bird in the Filipino folktale.[3][4] On its presentation in the pageant, it received significant media coverage and became viral on social media.[5][6]

Design[edit]

The Ibong Adarna dress was a strapless, backless, sweetheart gown with a slit that reaches up the thigh.[2][7][8] The original design was sketched as a red gown but it was replaced with orange, the color associated with the phoenix.[3] The dress was made up of layers of tulle with gold thread embroidery to simulate the look of feathers, the larger ones hemmed the bottom while small feathers were stitched at the bodice, and Swarovski crystals in tones of fire opal, hyacinth, jonquil aurora borealis, topaz, and topaz aurora borealis.[5][9]

According to Tumang, the dress was conceptualized as early as March 30, 2018, a week after he sketched Gray's Mayon gown.[5] Its design was inspired by the Mikimoto crown and ibong adarna, a mythological bird in Filipino folklore that possessed a magical voice that could heal and described in a 16th-century poem of the same name.[1][5] He also shared that it was challenging to obtain the materials for the gown as these were sourced outside the country, and it was one of the three dresses produced for Gray that reportedly were created by 16 artisans working 2,712 hours with the cost of materials amounting to P1,025,091.[6][10]

Reception[edit]

Gray wore the dress during the preliminary round of Miss Universe 2018 with a pair of dangling earrings called "Perlas ng Silangan" that featured a golden stud with three South Sea pearls, a design that was a tribute to the Philippine flag.[11] It received media coverage and became viral on social media.[5][6]

The dress' color made an impact in the competition according to Deni Rose M. Afinidad-Bernardo of the Philippine Star, writing, "As a result, Catriona was a standout in a sea of white dresses that flooded the evening gown portion."[7] Franco Regala of Manila Bulletin described the dress as "iconic."[12] Jacqueline Arias of the Philippine Daily Inquirer commented, "Catriona Gray broke the Internet with her slow-mo twirl during the swimsuit competition. But you know what really caught our eye? Her evening gown. It was a Mak Tumang piece inspired by the Ibong Adarna, a Filipino mythological creature, and the Mikimoto Crown."[8]

Exhibit[edit]

The Ibong Adarna gown was part of the SM City Pampanga exhibit in Deecmber 2018 together with the Mayon gown and Sinag gown, the dress Gray wore in Binibining Pilipinas 2018.[13] In March 2019, it was also displayed in SM Mall of Asia on the exhibit called "THE UNIVERSE: Celebration of World Class Talent."[14] In an interview with the TV talk show Magandang Buhay, Tumang said that the long-term plan was to display the dress on permanent exhibition.[15]
