Biography[edit]

The story[edit]

The protest[edit]

On the 16th of August 2013 - in Kafr Elsheikh city - Ibrahim was arrested in a protest against the police acts to empty Rab'aa Square from protestors, carrying a sign saying "سلمية" in Arabic which means "peaceful".

He was then moved to Kafr Elsheikh's first police office then to the Security Directorate of Kafr ElSheikh, where he was imprisoned for 4 days after which he was deported to ElAb'adiyah prison, where the duration of his imprisonment was extended further for 15 days multiple times.[2] He spent a total of 272 days at this prison suffering inhumane conditions where 26 prisoners are locked in the same cell with not enough space for all of them to sleep at the same time - thus having to take their sleep in turns while others stand. Finally, he was first sent to trial on 1 March 2014 which was postponed again for several times, till the final trial where the moment of 'truth' should have come on the 18th of May, 2014.

The final trial[edit]

Ibrahim, a prospective doctor and one of the top scorers among his country in the secondary education, was sentenced to 10 years along with 132 others in the same case. He was accused of a long list of crimes including vandalism, cutting roads, carrying sharp and heavy weaponry and joining the Muslim Brotherhood, which has been legally tagged as a terrorist organization party. Even though there was no proof of any of these, he was still sentenced to 10 years in prison.[3] Concerning the witnesses, the judge only listened to ALL the police officers accusing Ibrahim of those crimes and heard only a couple of those standing in Ibrahim's defence and then cut them off saying "that's enough", and asked Abdelaziz Shaker, the only one who was with Ibrahim and witnessed everything, to get some paperwork done in order for his statement to be included in the trial; which requires being above 21 years of age - a condition that Abdelaziz was yet to meet. On the 23rd of May, the Alexandria Medical Students Parliament of the second year (AMSP 2019) started a hashtag on the social networking sites (Facebook and Twitter) #الدكتور_ابراهيم meaning "Doctor Ibrahim" to spread the word asking for Media coverage for that case, seeking any support which could be of Ibrahim's aid.[4]
