History[edit]
Icelandic Roots was founded in 2013 by Sunna Olafson Furstenau and her husband, Jeff Furstenau.[1][3]
On August 2, 2013, during the 114th annual Deuce of August Icelandic Celebration in Mountain, Americans celebrated Icelandic roots in Mountain, N.D. The occasion marks the 139th anniversary of Iceland's adoption of a new constitution, officially declaring its independence from Denmark.[2]
In 2020, the community of Gimli acknowledged the historical significance of Iceland's presence by introducing a timber-made boardwalk known as "The Fjallkona Walkway," after an age-old Icelandic tradition.[1]
