Icona Resorts is a New Jersey-based privately owned hotel chain, with seven beach-front properties along the coasts of Cape May, Wildwood Crest, Avalon and Spring Lake.[1][2]

Icona Resorts operates under two brand names: Icona Resorts, a luxury hotel chain that remains open year-round, and Mahalo, the Hawaiian-themed resorts with properties open from April to November.[3]

History

Eustace Mita founded Icona Resorts in 2013. He bought Pier 6600 Motor Inn, located at Diamond Beach, in 2005 and operated it under the same name. After 8 years, extensive renovations were done and the hotel was renamed Icona Diamond Beach resort, a 4-star hotel, that opened in summer of 2013.[4][5] In 2015, Icona acquired the Golden Inn hotel in Avalon, a 155-room hotel and rebranded it as Icona Golden Inn, a 3-star hotel, in 2016.[6] Icona Golden Inn was later renamed as Icona Avalon.[7]

In 2016, the Palace Hotel of Cape May was acquired by Icona Resorts.[8] The hotel was renovated and renamed to Icona Cape May, and was opened in the summer of 2016.[9] In 2021, Icona acquired Windrift hotel at Avalon.[10] Windrift underwent around 5 million dollars worth of renovations and was reopened as Icona Windrift in April of 2021.[11]

In 2021, The Regal Beach Resort of Wildwood Crest was acquired by Icona and was later opened under its Hawaiian-themed brand Mahalo as Mahalo Diamond Beach in summer of 2022.[12][13] Continuing the expansion of its brand Mahalo, Icona bought The Capri hotel of Cape May and opened it as Mahalo Cape May, after renovations, in August of 2023.[14][15]

Icona acquired The Grand Victorian hotel of Spring Lake as a part of their Boutique collection in 2023.[3]

Future operations

Icona bought Beach Theatre property of Cape May in 2019 in an auction, after the theatre had been closed for more than a decade.[16] Icona has planned to build a 5-star hotel here.[17] This will be the city's first new hotel in the last half century.[18][19] Plans for the hotel include more than 150 rooms, high-end retail shops, restaurants, ballrooms and extensive interior parking.[20] But they have faced opposition from locals and the city council with regards to the historic preservation of the city.[21][22]

In early 2023, Icona presented a plan of a 150 million dollar luxury beach-front resort to Ocean City's council, at a site near Ocean City Boardwalk.[23]

Icona bought The Ocean Holiday Motor Inn of Wildwood Crest in July of 2019, with intentions of renovating the hotel and rebranding it as Mahalo but they have been struggling to get necessary permits and the site has remained untouched since then.[24] Planning board of Wildwood Crest has set a hearing of Icona's application on 13 Feb, 2024.[25]
