Ifeanyi Dike Jr., (born 28 October 1990) is a Nigerian actor and writer, best known for playing Titan/Tokunbo Akinjobi[1] on M-Net's Tinsel. He is also known for his role as Joji Bello on Kenneth Gyang's Ebony Life TV series, How I Made My First Million; as Fred on Ndani TV's Gidi Up; and as Andrew Van de Kamp on Ebony Life TV's adaptation of Desperate Housewives. In 2012, he began a column on YNaija, "Monkey Business",[2] where he details his mischievous experiences that he says "may or may not be entirely made up". In 2013, Ifeanyi started as Editor of Teen Y![3][4]
Early life[edit]
He and his sister, Lotanna, were born in Lagos to a doctor, Ifeanyi Dike, and nurse, Osuri Dike.[5]
He was educated at High Grade Primary school and at Faith Academy, a missionary boarding secondary school.[6] From 2005 until 2013, he studied at Igbinedion University, Okada, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery.[6] In 2013, he obtained an acting degree from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[6]
Ifeanyi had always expressed his doubts about being 100% interested in practising medicine and had said this was so because he had a short window between deciding what he wanted to study and enrolling into the university as well as a roster of diverse options from medicine to acting and broadcast journalism. He eventually made an impromptu decision to follow in his parents' footsteps and study medicine.
He later became slightly unhappy after realising that he didn't only want to be a doctor like the ones he enjoyed watching on Grey's Anatomy, rather he found their acting more interesting and decided then to pursue a career in acting and writing as well – passions he had enjoyed and exhibited at an earlier age when he joined the drama clubs in school. He has also said he wrote his first books at 7 and first appeared on a popular Nigerian television show, 'Scrap Palace' at the same age[6]
Writing career[edit]
Once he was certain of his new decision to pursue a career in acting and writing, he was appointed Editor–in–Chief of the university's medical publication. Then he got a job on Rhythm 93.7 Benin as an on-air personality and show concept creator for about a year,[7] during which he applied for a writing position on Nigerian Idol and was contacted for an interview. On arrival in Lagos, he was informed that the position had been filled. He went home that night, watched the show and wrote a review, which he showed to the project manager the next morning and offered to work without pay. He was employed on the basis of that review and says that this gave him the confidence to apply to magazines and newspapers as a freelance writer.[7]
He has since then accumulated writing credits on local media such as ThisDay, FAB, Arise Daily, Complete Fashion, Wow, Y! Magazine, YNaija, Hip Hop World Magazine, Élan (Next newspaper), 360NOBS, TW Magazine, MODE Magazine, The Fancy Hub,[8] MADE Magazine, Lagos Polo Club, and has worked as a content creator for Rhythm 93.7, Nigerian Idol (Seasons 1–3), Innovation Factory (for Copa Lagos), GLO Soccer Academy and Mai Atafo Inspired. He insists that he is most inspired by his column on YNaija, "Monkey Business".
In 2013, he wrote his first screenplay, A Scandal by June, which was picked up by The Audrey-Silva Company and is being made into a feature film.
Upcoming projects include screenplays for Desmond Elliot's Royal Arts Academy, African Magic's Afriwood, as well as personal short film and documentary projects.
Late in 2013, he became the first Editor of Teen Y![3]
Acting career[edit]
Ifeanyi attended his first ever audition in 2010 – for Tinsel – and wasn't called back until after a year, when he had long forgotten about the audition or an acting career.[7] Once he was called back in 2011, he participated in a second audition along with 50 other boys but was selected the next day to play Titan, a teen popstar with a peculiar love interest.[7]
In 2013, acted in Kenneth Gyang and Tom Rowland-Rees's series How I Made My First Million, which he said reminded him of Friends because of how funny and intelligent it was.[7] He filmed the first season in Jos.[7] The next season is scheduled to film in 2014, around the same time the first season airs.
Ifeanyi has a number of films, television shows and documentaries lined up for 2014.[9]
Personal life[edit]
Ifeanyi has described himself as a Free-thinking non-practising Christian despite having studied in a missionary secondary school where Christianity was mandatory. He has however implied in interviews that his religious stand has a lot to do with his experiences attending a missionary school.[6]
In an interview in New York with Lee Strasberg, he said that reading to kids and bringing the characters in the books to life and having their faces light-up has been by far his greatest achievement. It in fact inspired him to make a documentary about his concerns, called Down & Under, due for release in 2014.[6]
In December 2011, he was ranked number 27 on FAB magazine′s "Top 30 Nigerians Under 30" list.[10] Later that month, Y! magazine named him one of the "Top 21 Under 21 Younger Achievers".[6] He appeared on ThisDay's Style's list of "2011's most stylish men".[6] The following week, he received two Dynamix Youth Awards, one of which was for "Most Enterprising Student".[11][12]
In 2013, WOW magazine profiled Ifeanyi as one of the "12 Most Powerful Creatives 25 and Under".[6] In the magazine, he said about Nigeria: "I am proud to be Nigerian because regardless of trials and tribulations that emerge, we are a people that prevail. Hardship brings us together, sets us apart and makes us excellent."[6]
