Iga Weglinska (Polish: Iga Węglińska) is a Polish multidisciplinary designer known for her expertise in human-garment interaction, wearable technology, smart materials, future design, and emerging technologies. She has gained prominence for her clothing designs that incorporate biofeedback and elevate the relationship between clothing and the human body, alongside her avant-garde footwear designs.

Education[edit]

Iga Weglinska got a bachelor's (2010), master's (2012), and doctoral (2021) degrees from the Faculty of Industrial Design of the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. She is also an alumna and scholarship recipient of the Kraków Schools of Art and Fashion Design. Since 2016, Weglinska has been working as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Design at the Academy of Art in Szczecin, where she leads the Fashion Design Studio[1] on BA and MA studies. She also works as an associate lecturer at the School of Form, SWPS University in Warsaw.

Career[edit]

Since 2014, Iga Weglinska has been running her own design studio: Iga Weglinska Studio. The studio specializes in R&D projects, particularly in the fields of human-garment interaction, wearables, smart materials, body-tech, emerging technologies, and future design. Her innovative approach to design has earned her recognition in publications such as Vogue Italia, Dezeen, DESIGNBOOM, WGSN, Fast Company, I-D, Numéro, and Elle, which have described her as a designer of future-forward solutions.

From a theoretical standpoint, Iga Weglinska's work revolves around the relationship between the human body and object, and speculation on augmenting the human body through technology. Her projects encompass a wide range of techniques including digital fabrication, casting, sewing, and both physical and digital sculpting (i.e. 3D modeling in VR).

Iga Węglińska's artistic journey encompasses a wide range of projects. Her creations include the "Emotional Clothing"[2], two polysensory silhouettes merging biofeedback with fashion and proprietary smart materials, recognized by e.g. Dezeen[3] and Designboom[4]. In collaboration with FuturitySystems from Barcelona, the "Reshaped Body" project envisions human body augmentation for a 2030 orbital existence, reflecting Weglinska's futuristic interdisciplinary approach, and accompanied by a science fiction article[5]. "Shifted Shoes" democratizes design, allowing DIY footwear creation at home, lauded by Fast Company[6]. Moreover, her "Conceptual Form of Women's Shoes" blends traditional craftsmanship with digital computing and unconventional materials (such as composite concrete), gaining global recognition from Designboom[7], I-D, and Elle[8]. The project was showcased at the Szczecin Vanguards group exhibition at the National Museum in Szczecin or featured in the Step by Step[9] group exhibition in Krakow, alongside renowned artists like Iris van Herpen, Julian Hakes or United Nude. These ventures collectively underscore Weglinska's fusion of artistry and technology.

Iga Węglińska is a laureate of such distinctions as i.e.: the Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of Poland "Culture in Web" in 2020, the Art Scholarship of the City of Krakow in 2018. She also held an Artist in Residence position at the ElektroCouture TPH Group in Berlin, Germany, in 2017, further solidifying her international acclaim and innovative approach to design.
