Dr. Ignacio Prieto, born in 1872 in León, Guanajuato, studied at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City from 1883 to 1885. He began his undergraduate studies at the National School of Medicine in 1885 and completed them in 1891. Since he had not reached the required age to receive his degree, he had to wait until 1893, when he turned 21 years old. His undergraduate thesis was titled: "Surgical intervention in tuberculosis patients"[1].
In 1896 he was appointed as an intern at the Hospital de San Andrés and in 1901 he applied for a public examination to obtain the chair of Microscopic Anatomy and Histology at the Escuela Nacional de Medicina (National School of Medicine) [2].
From 1904 to 1906 he held the position of teaching assistant of the Pathological Anatomy class at the National School of Medicine. Then, in 1906, he was appointed head of the Experimental Pathology section at the National Pathological Institute[3], a position he held until the closure of the institute in 1914. During his stay at the National Pathological Institute, he carried out various research projects, including his work on endemic typhus, cirrhotic liver, adrenal glands, and cancer. He published his research in scientific papers and presented his findings at various national and international conferences [4]. His last work was on etiological considerations of cancer and he presented it at the 7th Latin American Medical Congress, held in Mexico City in January 1930[5].
He was also a professor at the National School of Medicine, teaching pathological anatomy from 1915 to 1929, microscopic anatomy, histology and embryology from 1917 to 1927, and cytology from 1926 to 1928 [6]. Likewise, from 1918 to 1924 he was an external surgeon at the General Hospital. He continued working as a professor at the National School of Medicine until his death on April 16, 1930[7]
Dr. Prieto was a member of the Mexican Society of Surgery and the Academia Nacional de Medicina de México.
