Igor Grigorievich Chervanev (Ukrainian: Ігор Григорович Черваньов; Russian: Игор Григорьевич Черванев) is an Ukranian scientist in the fields of geomorphology, physical geography and geoecology.

Early life and education[edit]

Chervanev was born in Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, then part of the USSR, on April 17,1937. In 1955 he graduated from the Vovchansk Pedagogical School and in 1960 from the Faculty of Geography of the M. Gorky Kharkiv State University with honors.[1] He began his doctoral studies at the same university in 1979 and successfully defended his dissertation on "Structural Analysis of Relief and its Automatization"[2] at Moscow State University on geomorphology and paleogeography.

Scientific and research work[edit]

During his studies, he began research work under the guidance of Professor P.V. Kovalev for three years researching modem and ancient glaciation of the Central Caucasus as part of the alpine glaciological expedition of Kharkiv State University. After graduating from the university, he worked as a researcher at the Branch Laboratory of Structural Geomorphology and Neotectonics at the Kharkiv Department of the Geographical Society of the USSR. In 1962 he was elected lecturer at the Department of General Physical Geography and Cartography at the Kharkiv State University, where he has worked since 1962 to present.[3]

He led pioneering work on mathematical modeling and structural analysis of productive deposits of the Medvezhe gas field - at that time the largest in the world, and later other large fields in Siberia and Ukraine for many years. These studies initiated a new scientific field - oil and gas paleogeomorphology. In 1984, for these research and developments, he was awarded an honorary diploma from the I.M. Gubkin Society of Oil Workers.[4]

Chervanev has developed and taught several training courses for bachelors, specialists and masters of geography: general geography, global ecology (environmental science), theory and methodology of geographical science, mathematical methods in geography, assessment of natural resources. history of geography in Ukraine, geosystem basics of environmental management, management territories and altemative energy.

He is the author (co-author as well as a scientific editor) of 14 textbooks and teaching aids.[4]

Honors[edit]

In 1992, with the advent of altemative academies of sciences in Ukraine, he was elected a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Technological Cybernetics of Ukraine for a cycle of work from self-regulation and self-organization of geomorphological systems.

In the same year he became a full member of the Ukrainian Ecological Academy of Sciences for his work in the field of environmental management and nature conservation.

In 2004 he received the honorary title of Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine and was awarded the honorary title of Honored Professor of Kharkiv National University.

In 2005, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Kharkiv National University, he was awarded the honorary badge of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine.

In 2009, he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine for his many scientific achievements.[4]
