Igor Mazurenko and arm wrestling in Poland
Living in Gdańsk and training in local clubs, Igor heard about a professional tournament to be held on the pier in Sopot. In addition to the Bench lifting, the arm wrestling competitions were included in the tournament. Igor took part in them, winning the final against the player who had won for a few years at the Pier in Sopot. From this moment, Mazurenko devoted his life to the study of everything connected with this hitherto unknown in Poland, sports discipline. Thanks to his initiative, a group of enthusiasts was formed, and that was the point where the history of the Polish armwrestling started. Among them were: Athletes: The first contestants representing Poland in the tournament «Giants’ Duel»: Mirosław Myszke, Robert Grigorcewicz, Bartłomiej Babij, Daniel Hebel, and Ireneusz Weber; First National Polish team selected for the first international tournament, namely the European Championship: Łukasz Krasoń, Daniel Hebel, Bartłomiej Babij, Marcin Kreft, Robert Tysięczny, Mirosław Myszke, Dariusz Gabrynowicz, Norbert Parzucha, Daniel Okoniewski. Starting armwrestling in Poland
In 1999, Igor Mazurenko, doing weightlifting, received an offer from the Ukrainian Armwrestling Federation to hold a match between Poland and Ukraine. The event was to popularize the sport in Poland. There were many sportsmen wishing to take part in the competition, but only five athletes from each side could participate in the tournament. On November 28, 1999, during a bodybuilding competition, the first arm wrestling tournament in Poland called "Duel of the Giants" was held. In February 2000, another tournament with the participation of Ukrainian athletes was organized, and in March in Gdynia the first Polish Arm Wrestling sports club "Golden Tour" was officially registered. In April 2000, the club's delegation visited Moscow at the invitation of the EAF President Igor Ahmedzhin. The professionalism of Polish representatives was appreciated by EAF, and the Polish Federation was entrusted with organizing the X European Armwrestling Championship in Poland. The most important event of 2000 was the acceptance of the Polish Federation into the European Armwrestling Federation. During the congress of the WAF, held during the Arm Wrestling World Cup in Rovaniemi (Finland), most participants agreed that the World Cup 2001 would be held in Poland.
