Igwijo
iGwijo Squad Artist
The phenomenon called "Amagwijo" is a combination of Xhosa and other Nguni songs, sung at special events which include Rugby Matches, Soccer, Schools or Emgidini (Welcome Ceremony).
It all started in the rural areas at school soccer grounds and has over time hit the mainstream and become somewhat of a National Anthem of the "World".
How iGwijo Squad started
This gave birth to the "Gwijo Squad" which was formed with mostly members hailing from the Eastern Cape[1], it started off with 35 Members and the number has now increased to 920. A group of people united by sports to show support through song.
In 2018 the Squad sang at Ellis Park in support of our very own Rugby World Cup Captain Siyamathanda Kolisi[2] in his first match as a Springbok skipper.
iGwijo's Famous Song
The Gwijo Squad now has an album with its famous song "Uthuleleni Mawande", which you can get and other songs via music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Dizzer & YouTube.
They have been traveling the world and attending games in a show of true uniquely South African support and culture.
The song's inspiration is defined by a particular Mzansi flavor that captures the celebratory feeling, the emotion in them, a moment in time.
