Il Regno (English: the kingdom) is a 2020 comedy film directed by Francesco Fanuele.[1]
Plot[edit]
After the death of his estranged father, bus driver Giacomo discovers that he has inherited all of his father’s possessions as well as an old country estate, where a small community live according to medieval traditions. Giacomo is surprised to learn that his father was self-proclaimed king of this "kingdom", and that being the only heir, he is the successor to the throne. His new subjects live a simple life, rejecting modern technology and values and use a barter system instead of money.
Giacomo discovers that he has a half-sister, Lisa, who has ambitions to the throne. Lisa claims that Giacomo is incapable of ruling as he comes from the outside world; he tries to ingratiate himself with his subjects in an attempt to escape from the loneliness of his former life, however, Lisa manages to convince them he is not a worthy ruler. Trying to regain their respect, Giacomo begins to rule as a despot; he invades a local farmer’s land, kidnapping him and forcing him to join the "kingdom".
News then spreads, signalling the beginning of the end, first with the arrival of migrants from the outside world who Giacomo welcomes to the dismay of his subjects, leading them to shut him in his "castle", and second with the arrival of the police who threaten to return and clear the estate in 48 hours. Giacomo intends to defend his kingdom but ends up abandoned by his people, who with the help of Lisa drug him the night before the police arrive.
Despite his best efforts, Giacomo inevitably finds himself in jail, sentenced to 5 years, where he recounts his story to the other inmates. In prison he is visited by Ofelia, a peasant from the kingdom who lost her virginity to his father and intends to marry him when he is released, however, Giacomo can’t support the fact that she has slept with his father. After the credits we learn that Bartolomeo now lives in Giacomo's estate.[1][2][3][4]
Reception[edit]
The film has a rating of 5.5/10 on IMDb.[1] Paola Casella on MyMovies.it gave it 2.5 out of 5 stars, she says the film never presses the accelerator on social criticism, comedy or credible relationships and that the bizarre events that befall the clumsy Giacomo sometimes fail to make you laugh.[3]
Production[edit]
Il Regno was released on 26 June 2020, exclusively for on demand platforms.[2] It had limited box office success, attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic.[3]
