Ilan Rubin (born May 18, 1956) is an Israeli-American photographer based in New York.

Life and Work[edit]

Ilan Rubin grew up in Israel. He received a degree in photography from Hadassah Academic College (known as Hadassah College Jerusalem at the time) before moving to New York City in 1985. Since then he has lived and worked in New York City. Ilan was represented by Art Department Agency from 1995-2015 and by LGA and Welcome Management from 2015-2018.

Ilan Rubin specializes in still-life photography. He has had long-term commercial collaborations with The New York Times, Knoll (company) and Barneys New York [1].

Through the 1990s and 2000s Ilan Rubin's editorial work was regularly featured in InStyle, German and Japanese Vogue, Amica , House & Garden, Harper's Bazaar, and Marie Claire. He pioneered a visual style based on using bare lights without reflectors, in order to create hard-edged shadows and strong color contrast. According to Jack Crager in Graphis Magazine the result is photographs that "blend the sublime with the absurd".[2] His most long-standing visual influences are Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, and Francis Bacon.

Ilan Rubin's most recent editorial work focuses on collaborating with up and coming publications such as Beauty Papers[3] and Fraulein Magazine.

Notable Campaigns[edit]

  • Barney's New York Print Catalogues, 2011-2015.[5]
  • NY Times, T Magazine, "On White" Series, 2004-2009.[6]
  • Barely There, "No Funny Shapes Under Your Clothes" campaign, 2006.[7]
