Rabbi Ilay Ofran

Ilay Ofran (Hebrew: אילעאי עופרן‎, born 1982) He is a rabbi and a psychologist and Israeli Internet celebrity. Serves in rabbinate in Kvutzat Yavne, and is the head of the Mechina named "Ruach Hasade" (the spirit of the field) .

Biography[edit]

Ofran was born in Jerusalem in 1982 to Mira Ofran, a physicist, daughter of Yeshayahu Leibowitz, and Abraham Ofran (Zefarani). He grew up in Jerusalem, and studied at Himmelfarb High School.

Ofran studied at the religious kibbutz yeshiva in Ma'ale Gilboa. He served in the Field Intelligence Corps of IDF, first in a combat course, but due to an injury he ended his service as a combat supporter. Then he studied in Yeshivat Har Etzion.[1]

Ofran is a graduate of psychology and Talmud studies at Bar-Ilan University and rabbinical studies at Beit Morsha in Jerusalem. He graduated with a master's degree in psychology at Tel Aviv-Yafo Academic College. Volunteered at an aid center for religious men who were victims of sexual assault.

Ofran was ordained as rabbi of the Kvutzat Yavne at 2009. In 2016, together with Rabbi Itamar Chaikin, he founded the "Ruach Hassade" Mechina in Kibbutz Be'erot Yitzhak, which has about 70 students.[2]

Ofran also teaches at "MATAN" - a women's Torah institute, Tzahali seminary and Herzog College, and is a member of the Nemanei Torah Ve'Avoda movement.

In 2019 he was included in the list of "Promising Young People - Leaders of the Future" published by the Globes newspaper.

Ofran has about 17,000 followers on Facebook. In the "Oshiyot Reshet Survey" conducted in 2017 among religious people, Ofran came in 15th place in the politics and current affairs category.

As a grandson of Prof. Yeshayahu Leibowitz he often refers to his grandfather's views and thoughts in his words and writings.

Married to Avital Ofran Rosenak, principal at the "Pelech" school in Kiryat Ekron. Together they have five children.
