"Ill Vibe" is the fourth and last promotional single from American rapper Busta Rhymes' debut studio album The Coming and features fellow American rapper Q-Tip. The song was written by Rhymes and Q-Tip, who also produced it. It was released as the B-side to the album's second single "It's a Party" featuring Zhané on June 25, 1996.

Background

"Ill Vibe" marks the sixth collaboration between Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip after previously collaborating on A Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario" and its remix, Big Daddy Kane's "Come on Down", and A Tribe Called Quest's Oh My God and One Two Shit. Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip have been close friends and Q-Tip has mentored him, while Rhymes was a member of hip hop group Leaders of the New School. He was the one Rhymes called up while having problems recording his first solo studio album The Coming on his own, after the disbanding of his former group.[1]

They would proceed to collaborate on numerous tracks and release a collaborative mixtape in 2013 named The Abstract and the Dragon, which also contains "Ill Vibe".[2]

Composition

"Ill Vibe" is a hardcore hip hop, boom bap and conscious hip hop song, written by Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip, who also produced it. The song is composed in 4
4
time
and the key of B major, with a tempo of 93 beats per minute.[3] It has a duration of three minutes and twenty-nine seconds. The song contains a prominent sample of Hugo Montenegro's 1969 song "Dizzy" in its beat.[4]

"Ill Vibe" has a rather simple song structure with two verses and a hook following each verse. Lyrically, the song is about the negative vibes Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip get from different situations. Rhymes starts his verse by bragging about his rapping skills before rapping about a girl and her friends trying to rob him. In Q-Tip's verse, he raps about fake people to watch out for and how kindness is being taken advantage of in today's world. In the hook, Rhymes and Tip tell each other that they caught the "ill vibe", rapping "I caught the ill vibe, Tip! Word, Bus? Yo, yo, word!".

Critical reception

Daryl McIntosh of Albumism commented that "as with 'Scenario' the contrast of the wild Busta Rhymes alongside the calmer Q-Tip proved to be one of hip-hop's most gratifying collaborations. The assist by production trio the Ummah helped add an organic feel not only to the song, but throughout the entirety of [The Coming]".[5]
