Illinois Loop

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Illinois Loop is an Illinois education lobbying group.

The Illinois Loop operates online. It started informally in about 1995, in the west suburbs of Chicago. Teachers and parents used online message boards and the Internet to criticize what they perceived as dangerous trends in reading and math instruction in their schools.

The Illinois Loop runs a mailing list. Participants include teachers, board members, education experts, and parents. While a principal focus is on education in Illinois, the group comments on nationwide education policy as well.

Areas of particular concern to the Illinois Loop include expansion of whole language, adoption by schools of reform mathematics programs instead of traditional mathematics, changes in the role of the teacher as an instructor, and new developments in courses such as history, literature, geography, grammar and science.

Issues

Some supporters of constructivist approaches in education describe the Illinois Loop as a conservative political organization. The group claims it is apolitical and has leaders and members who are Democrats, Republicans, liberals, conservatives and libertarians.

Other criticisms: "Illinois Loop does not support the concept of differentiation or changing instruction methods to support the learning style of particular students".
