Illuminati (Roman Academy)
Illuminati (Accademia degli’Illuminati), was one of numerous literary and artistic academies stablished in Rome during the 16th century. Inspired by the Renaissance, the Italian academies were "associations of learned men, and not institutes for instruction"; often they assumed odd and fantastic names, as was the fashion at the time. Illuminati was founded in 1598 by the Marchesa Isabella Aldobrandini Pallavicino, [1] of Cortemaggiore (1549-1623), one of the most cultivated and refined ladies of her time. [2] The lady especially loved poetry; authors such as Niccolò Secchi and Antonio Droghi dedicated some works to her. She was very active to have one of the first editions of the Jerusalem Delivered of Torquato Tasso printed and made the castle of Soragna an intellectual "cenacle". [3]
