Immo Blaese is an interactive designer, coder, and graphic designer currently living in the UK. His outstanding interactive art projects are Byteswerk and Newspeak. Those projects are using internet art as a medium while reflecting his inner world about art, politics, and philosophy. As he is using algorithms and animations to express his ideal world, his main artworks can be considered as examples of New Media Art.
He worked in the past with clients such as Electronic Arts, Disney, Warner Brothers and Capcom. Also, he has been involved with interactive installations for Science Museum, London, Centre for Life and the Victoria & Albert Museum, which resulted in an award from D&AD for the design team that he was a member of in 2009.[1][2]
Early life
He was born in Mannheim, Germany in 1971. In his early years, his parents moved to Morocco and France. Thus, he is able to speak fluently in both French and German.
He received his master of arts degree from University of West London. He gained his professional development certificate in digital arts at Southwark College.[3]
Art Works
Newspeak
Newspeak is an online project, which was created for the 10th Web Biennial by Immo Blaese. [4][5] Newspeak plays on the idea of George Orwell's Doublespeak. The project has an algorithm to find a living sentence from Twitter which contains the antonym of the picked word. The project's principal aim is to bring up questions of how we validate everyday information in the media and the impact of social media while we are expressing ourselves.[6][7] Newspeak brings the deceptive and self-centered language to light while using smart animations, and it is continuously being generated in real time like a perpetual art machine.[8]
Byteswerk
Byteswerk is also an online project which the artist created in 2011. Byteswerk is an interesting project as it stretches out the borders of the natural and social sciences. The algorithm works basically as it's taking a living tweet from the internet and it's turning this tweet into a colored schema. While creating such a project the artist was influenced especially by Theo Van Doesburg, Paul Dirac, Ludwig Wittgenstein and concrete art. With Byteswerk, Immo Blaese connects the physical meaning of colors and linguistic structures in human minds. In order to do that he created an English color alphabet with 39 characters and 140 maximum characters. He assigned colors to the letters, in a subjective manner, according to their vowels relating to warmth. (For example, the letter "a" sounded warm and the letter "o" sounded cool.)[9]
