Imogen Tyler FAcSS is a British academic and social activist. She is Professor of Sociology[lower-alpha 1] at Lancaster University. Tyler was a member and civic commissioner of the Morecambe Bay Poverty Truth Commission, and she sits on the board of trustees of the UK Poverty Truth Network.[2] Her specialization is on social stigma,[3] social abjection, and social justice.[4]

Early life and education

Tyler studied at Bolton Institute for Higher Education,[5] Cardiff University[citation needed] and Lancaster University.

Career

Tyler is currently Professor of Sociology[lower-alpha 2] at Lancaster University. In 2019, she was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences. Tyler was a civic commissioner for Morecambe Bay Truth Commission during its first commission and is a trustee for the National Poverty Truth Network (since 2019). Since 2020, she has been a member of the executive board of Lancaster Black History Group, a grassroots anti-racist community education group. She writes on topical issues for publications, including openDemocracy and The Sociological Review.[6] In 2014, she received the Philip Leverhulme Prize.[7] Tyler has been a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences since 2019.[6][8]
