Imre van Opstal (born in Velden, Netherlands in 1989) is a dancer, choreographer and director. Van Opstal attended the Dance Preparatory Course at Valuascollege in Venlo, under the direction of Liesbeth Wiertz and afterwards she received her education at the Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam in the years 2007-2011. During her training she danced with, among others, the companies Conny Janssen Danst and Dansgroep Amsterdam. After completing Codarts Rotterdam, Imre danced with Carte Blanche[1] the Norwegian national company of contemporary dance, based in Bergen in western Norway. She returned to the Netherlands and since 2012 she has been associated with the international dance company Nederlands Dans Theater II and I[2]. In 2017 she moved to Israel and was dancing with Batsheva Dance Company[3] under the direction of Ohad Naharin. She has created and performed in work by many choreographers, including; Jiri Kylian, Paul Lightfoot & Sol Leon, Ohad Naharin, Hans van Manen, Crystal Pite, Hofesh Shechter, Sharon Eyal, Johan Inger, Alexander Ekman.

Together with her brother Marne, both performing artists and siblings, they form a choreographic and creative duo.

In 2014 and 2015 they created works LiNK and John Doe for Up&Coming Choreographers for Nederlands Dans Theater 2. In 2017 they created 'The Grey' in the program Smoke and Mirrors for NDT 2. In 2019 they created ‘Take Root’ for Nederlands Dans Theater 1, which received a nomination for the Swan Award for ‘best dance production 2019’[4]. In 2021 they created ‘Baby don’t hurt me’ for Nederlands Dans Theater 1 around the themes of identity, sexuality, gender and love [5] and ‘Eye Candy’ for Rambert dance company in London about the politics of nudity featuring eight dancers dressed in synthetic breastplates that make them look like Greco-Roman sculptures.

Imre won the 2014 Danserfonds '79 incentive prize [6], as well she was nominated for the Piket Kunst Prijzen and she received the Swan Award[7] for 'most impressive dance achievement' for her part in Salt Womb in 2017.

Dance is normal in the family van Opstal, who all grew up in a small village in the south of The Netherlands. Her older sister Myrthe and brother Marne were also dancers with the "Nederlands Dans Theater 1&2". Xanthe her youngest sister also danced at the Nederlands Dans Theater 2 – and then moved to Israel to dance with Batsheva Dance Company under the direction of Ohad Naharin. The NTR made the documentary Same Difference about the four of them, which was broadcast on 13 October 2013 by the public broadcaster.
