The in-cosmetics Group[edit]

The in-cosmetics Group comprises five leading B2B personal care ingredient trade fairs, and one educational conference, that is part of a portfolio of approximately 500 events organised by Reed Exhibitions, a division of RELX Group.

Each of the in-cosmetics Group events operates to serve the worldwide beauty and cosmetics industry, with each of its shows acting as a global, regional and local launch pad for innovation in personal care ingredients and technologies. The events also provide high-level education and consumer insights specifically for formulators, R&D, and testing & regulatory professionals that work in the personal care sector, including skin care, hair care, color cosmetics and fragrances.

The flagship event of the in-cosmetics Group portfolio is in-cosmetics Global and takes place every April at a different European venue. The only exception to this is Paris, which the event returns to every three years.

Since the in-cosmetics Group’s first show in 1990, other regional in-cosmetics events have materialized from the brand; in-cosmetics Asia in 2008; in-cosmetics India in 2006, although the India offshoot was indefinitely cancelled in 2008 after only three editions; in-cosmetics Latin America in 2013; in-cosmetics Korea and the in-cosmetics Formulation Summit in 2015; and finally in-cosmetics North America in 2016.

in-cosmetics Global[edit]

The first in-cosmetics exhibition, launched in 1990, took place in the United Kingdom, at Birmingham's NEC. That year, around 900 professionals working for cosmetic product manufacturers networked with approximately 80 suppliers of personal care ingredients, each exhibiting their goods and company services.[1]. Since then, the in-cosmetics flagship event expanded in size, with the show attracting an average of 9,300 visitors and 780 exhibitors over the last three years.

Education[edit]

in-cosmetics began offering education feature areas at the show in 1995 with the launch of Technical Seminars, which are study-led presentations for industry professionals to learn about the technical aspects of new personal care ingredients. In 2000, in-cosmetics introduced Marketing Trends presentations to the education offering, which provided insights into the latest industry trends. The exhibition’s most popular feature area is the Innovation Zone, an area that showcases all the latest product releases, and attracts up to 75% of visitor attendance[2].

Re-brand[edit]

In order to reflect in-cosmetics’ worldwide reach, and international appeal, the show re-branded to in-cosmetics Global. The decision to re-brand was also made in order to differentiate the European edition of the show as the largest and most international of all the in-cosmetics Group events[3].

Competition[edit]

In 2005, in-cosmetics’ competitor event, Personal Care Ingredients Europe (PCIE) was indefinitely cancelled ahead of its show in March, due to a lack of support. PCIE’s cancellation was largely put down to losing out to in-cosmetics, whose event took place just one week apart from the PCIE exhibition[4].

Notable Acquisitions[edit]

In 2006, Reed Exhibitions expanded its offering of personal care industry events after acquiring Personal Care Ingredients Asia (PCIA), Personal Care and Homecare Ingredients (PCHi) and Cosmetic and Household Ingredients (CHi) from Step Exhibitions. It was deemed that the acquisition complemented the in-cosmetics portfolio[5].

High-profile attendees[edit]

A report was issued from the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2008, which revealed that few companies adhered to all, if any, of the conventions required in the sourcing process of natural ingredients. In response, a biodiversity roundtable was hosted at in-cosmetics in Paris, which featured the French secretary of state for ecology, Chantal Jouanno.

The aim of the roundtable was to raise awareness of the rate at which biodiversity was being lost, and the impact this would have on the cosmetics industry and its consumers.

The debate was moderated by Eduardo Escobedo, economic affairs officer at the United Nations Conference on Trade Development (UNCTAD), and included Rik Kutsch Lojenga, the executive director of the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT), Carole Pelle, manager of raw materials and sustainable development at L’Oreal, and Marcos Vaz, director of sustainability at Natura[6].

Awards[edit]

in-cosmetics won the ‘Best Trade Exhibition’ award at the Event Awards ceremony in 2012[7]. The show won two further awards in 2014 at the AEO Excellence Awards for Best overseas Tradeshow in the over 2,000 square meter floor space category, as well as the Best Tradeshow Exhibition Overall for the over 2,000 square meter floor space category[8].

in-cosmetics Asia[edit]

The first regional event to be added to the in-cosmetics Group portfolio was in-cosmetics Asia. The first edition of the show took place in Bangkok, Thailand and has returned to the location every year since its launch in 2008. in-cosmetics Asia celebrated their ten year anniversary in 2018 and is the shows largest exhibition after in-cosmetics Global.

Bangkok Floods[edit]

During a period of heavy rainfall over Bangkok in 2011, in-cosmetics Asia was forced to postpone their event due to the threat of floods[9]. Although the venue itself remained unaffected, the floods had touched different areas of the city. It was decided that “disruption to movement around the capital and the outlying areas make it impossible to guarantee the delivery of a successful event…” and in-cosmetics Asia was re-scheduled to open its doors six weeks later[10]. As a response to the situation, in-cosmetics Asia offered two additional presentations to their education programe that focused on how to turn a crisis into an opportunity[11].

in-cosmetics India[edit]

After only three editions of in-cosmetics India, the decision was made in 2009 to cancel the event indefinitely. Reed Exhibitions attributed the decision to the ongoing global economic crisis, with many of its customers “forced to streamline sales and marketing costs and defer plans to expand into new territories”[12].

in-cosmetics Latin America[edit]

In 2013 in-cosmetics expanded its regional portfolio with in-cosmetics Latin America. The location chosen for the show was Sao Paul, due to the city’s position as an “industrial hub for both manufacturers and suppliers”[13]. The city is also home to ABIHPEC, the Brazilian Association of the cosmetic, toiletry and fragrance industry[14].

The decision to expand into the South American market was largely down to the exponential growth Brazil was showing within the cosmetics and personal care market, and the countries move toward consuming more premium end products[15].

in-cosmetics Korea[edit]

in-cosmetics decided to grow its Asia portfolio in 2015, with the launch of in-cosmetics Korea at the COEX Exhibition Center in Seoul. The show was, at the time, the only personal care ingredients tradeshow of its type. When asked about the decision to launch in-cosmetics Korea, Lucy Gillam, the then Senior Exhibition Director to in-cosmetics commented that Korea was “home to more than 1,000 cosmetic manufacturers, and the world’s largest spenders per capita in the field of skincare and male grooming products, [in-cosmetics Korea] offers a huge opportunity for ingredient supplier to build their business in this lucrative and sophisticated market”[16]

in-cosmetics Formulation Summit[edit]

In 2015, the in-cosmetics Group decided to expand its educational offering with the Formulation Summit. The Summit would move away from the trade show and exhibition format, toward a targeted education-focused conference, with study-led presentations geared toward R&D professionals and cosmetic formulators[17]. Each Summit focuses on a trend, with the education programe shaped around that trend to provide insights and solutions to challenges that arise from a product development standpoint. The first Formulation Summit addressed technical, regulatory and commercial insights and solutions to different aspects of texture and sensory aesthetics in personal care formulations[18], with the Summit’s following themes over the years including Protection[19], Biobeauty[20] and Personalisation[21].

in-cosmetics North America[edit]

The most recent addition to the in-cosmetics Group portfolio was in-cosmetics North America in 2016. Its first edition opened its doors in New York City with 150 international exhibitors[22]. New York City continues to host the show.
