In Contrast

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

“In Contrast” is a biweekly broadcast and podcast show hosted by Ilan Stavans at New England Public Radio. It explores “culture in the making... in space that encourages diverse perspectives.”[1] It takes the form of extended, in-depth interviews with artists, writers, activists, scholars, photographers, lexicographers, translators, and musicians. Each episode is dedicated to another guest. It is produced in partnership between New England Public Radio and Quixote Productions.

History[edit]

The pilot of “In Contrast” aired on July 25, 2015. It featured three guests interviewed by Ilan Stavans: author and translator Tim Parks; hip hop artist, activist and assistant professor of popular culture at Clemson University, Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika, whose piece “Challenging the Whiteness of Public Radio,” had appeared on Transom.org, Buzzfeed and NPR's All Things Considered; and Stacy Klein and Matthew Glassman of Double Edge Theatre in Ashfield, Massachusetts, who at the time were preparing for the opening of Once a Blue Moon (Cada Luna Azul), a Latin American-based “summer spectacle.”[2]

New England Public Radio and Quixote Productions subsequently partnered to officially start releasing podcasts of “In Contrast” in June 2017 with Ilan Stavans as the host and executive producer John Voci. Topics included current politics, children’s books, jazz, poetry, and translation. Guests include Nobel Prize winning economists Joseph Stiglitz and Amartya Sen; Pulitzer Prize winning writers Jennifer Egan, Forrest Gander, and Junot Diaz; philosopher Martha Nussbaum; children’s book authors Norton Juster and Mo Willems; McArthur Foundation grant winner Peter Cole; environmentalist writer Barry Lopez; journalists Robin Wright and Wesley Lowery; New York Times columnist Bret Stephens; and Merriam-Webster lexicographer Peter Sokolowski. The show reaches an audience of approximately 200,000 listeners. Episodes are released on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month.

In 2018, “In Contrast” released a six-episode series called “What’s Wrong with American Media?” with Ilan Stavans and Ray Suarez. It included episodes about division in American politics, the fragmentation of American audiences, the work of news anchors like Ed Morrow, and the difference between American and international news reporting.[3]
