IndiBlogger is an Indian blog directory and community website, started in Chennai in 2007. It kept a directory and ranking of Indian blogs, organised offline "blogger meets", and ran contests in which brands worked with bloggers.[1][2] In 2019 it stopped taking new sign-ups and archived most of the parts of the site that needed staff to run.[3]

History

IndiBlogger was founded in 2007 and began as a directory where bloggers could submit their blogs.[3][2] It was set up by four friends, Renie Ravin, Anoop Johnson, Vineet Rajan and Karthik DR, and the company was based in Chennai.[1] Features added over the next few years included a discussion forum, IndiVine and a blog ranking called IndiRank, and by 2012 The Economic Times described the site as a social network for Indian bloggers.[2]

The site was started with an investment of 10,000 rupees and became profitable in June 2010. In July 2012 it had about 27,000 registered bloggers and a 14-person team in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi.[2] Anuradha Goyal's 2014 book The Mouse Charmers: Digital Pioneers of India has a chapter on IndiBlogger.[1]

IndiBlogger published surveys of Indian bloggers under the title "State of the Indian Blogosphere". Global Voices reported on the 2009 survey,[4] and the 2014 survey was run jointly with Businessworld.[5]

Business model

The company's revenue came from brand campaigns, which Rajan called "earned media". Its first was a blogger meet with Microsoft in 2007. By mid-2012 it had held about 50 blogger meets and more than 50 contests with brands including Samsung, Pepsi, Hindustan Unilever, Castrol, Cleartrip and Tata Docomo. Event management companies ran most of the meets.[2] In December 2011 the launch campaign for KFC's first grilled product in India included a blogger contest and a sampling exercise with IndiBlogger.[6]

2019 changes

On 6 June 2019 IndiBlogger announced that the parts of the site that needed staff would be archived, and that automated features such as IndiVine and IndiSpire would keep running.[7] Social Samosa reported the next day that the site had stopped taking new sign-ups and that its forum would be made read-only.[3]
