Until 2009, the housing development where present day Indianapolis Heights is was called Millersburg when it was originally established in 1988. The settlement is Located in between Atlanta and Arcadia, Indiana (Atlanta to the north, Arcadia to the south), along Indiana State Road 19. Some long-time residents of the plot still refer to the area they reside in as "Old Town Millersburg" The name "Indianapolis Heights" most likely evolved from schools south of the community. In Arcadia, the Hamilton Heights School Corporation (Hamilton Heights Middle School and Hamilton Heights High School) has been said to have influenced "heights" in the community name. Some residents around Arcadia even reference the community as Hamilton Heights. This also may come from the fact that it is in Hamilton County Indianapolis Heights is in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Area. Consequently, it is now known as Indianapolis Heights.

History[edit]

When settled in 1988, Indianapolis Heights (then Millersburg) was like any other small country town in Indiana. It bordered a railroad, creek, and most residents lived near or on Main Street. The name Millersburg originated when Reggie Miller, in the 1987 NBA Draft, joined the Indiana Pacers. Because Indianapolis Heights is close to Indianapolis, many residents were Pacers fans. Reggie Miller, being the most mentioned player on the team, was targeted for the naming of Millersburg.

Area Codes[edit]

The Indianapolis Heights physical proposed area overlaps Area code 317 and 765. Although most residents use a 317 phone number, this strange diversity still has been one of the factors that has prevented Indianapolis Heights from becoming incorporated in recent years. No town or city government has gotten involved yet, but local petitions have been tried to extend the 317 area code over all of Hamilton County. Most likely, if this were to pass, it would allow Indianapolis Heights to become a town officially.
