Indira Monica Raman is an Indian-American neuroscientist who is the Bill and Gayle Cook Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurobiology at Northwestern University. Her research considers systems neuroscience and ion channel biophysics.

Early life and education[edit]

Raman was encouraged to study science by her father, Varadaraja V. Raman, who spoke fifteen languages.[1] She decided to study neurobiology, and joined the undergraduate program at Cornell University.[1][2] She completed her doctoral research at University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she studied glutamate receptors in the nucleus magnocellularis.[3] During her graduate research, she became interested in electrophysiology.[1] She was a postdoctoral researcher at the Vollum Institute at Oregon Health and Science University.[4] As a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University she identified a new type of sodium current that flows through channels that reopen when the membrane is polarized.[5]

Research and career[edit]

In 1999, Raman moved to Northwestern University, where she established her own research group.[5] She is interested in neurons in the cerebellum.[6] The cerebellum acts to error-correct and regulate complex movement.[7] Her research considers the ionic mechanisms of neuronal excitability.[6] Building on the work of her PhD, she has expanded understanding of the resurgent sodium current in rapidly firing Purkinje cells.[5]

Raman has written and spoken about science, scientific research, and research culture.[8][9][10][11] She has described science as "a life-permeating philosophy that buoys me up both inside and outside the laboratory".[12]

At the 24th Chicago Humanities Festival in 2013, Raman and literature professor Susie Phillips presented a discussion titled "A Neuroscientist and a Humanist Walk Into a Bar", in which they imagine "what would happen if William Shakespeare tried to apply for a National Institutes of Health grant to write the infamously psychotic character Hamlet".[13]

She chaired an academic task force set up to propose reforms to improve student mental health at Northwestern.[14] The task force proposed changes to the school calendar, beginning the school year earlier and offering courses split across the winter break.[15]
