Indonesian Music Museum (Museum Musik Indonesia) is the only music museum in Indonesia, it is located in Malang, East Java. Every aspect of life has its own history which it is can be remembered. So as with the development of music, each era has its golden age. Whether it's a songs, singers, lifestyles, until media (recording and listening tools) to enjoy it. This museum is located at the 2nd floor of the Gajayana Arts Building, Nusakambangan Street Number 19, Malang.[1]

The history of the Indonesian Music Museum goes back to the Katjoetangan Lovers Group (Komunitas Pecinta Katjoetangan), which has existed since the 1970s. This group contains music lovers who give themselves, energy, time, and wealth to take care of the musical heritage that exists. Katjoetangan itself is known as a gathering place for art organizers in Malang in the past. Over time the group transformed into Malang Singing Gallery (Galeri Malang Bernyanyi) in 2009.[2] Then the Gallery transformed into the Indonesian Music Museum in 2015. After being registered to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Indonesian Music Museum was officially established. Government of Malang gave support by allowing the museum manager to use the Gajayana Arts Building as a place for the Indonesian Music Museum. Malang Singing Gallery's first location was in a 3 x 5 m garage at the home of Hengki Herwanto's parents, Hengki Herwanto was the founder and chairman of Malang Singing Gallery or Indonesian Music Museum itself. The first storefront prepared was a 35 x 40 cm mini glass shelf commonly used by cigarette sellers bought at stall in the Sawojajar area. On the 4th year, Malang Singing Gallery has been able to contract a house in the Griya Santa area. The size of the room can be used to showcase collections, wider than the previous place

Inauguration[edit]

In 2015 the Malang Singing Gallery was transformed into the Indonesian Music Museum. After being registered to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, the Indonesian Music Museum was officially established. Government of Malang gave support by allowing the museum manager to use the Gajayana Arts Building as a place for the Indonesian Music Museum. On November 19, 2016, the Indonesian Music Museum was inaugurated directly by the Indonesian Creative Economy Agency. The Indonesian Music Museum occupies the 2nd floor of the Gajayana Arts Building on Nusakambangan Street No.19, Malang City.

Collections[edit]

According to the records in the Indonesian Music Museum until the end of 2018, there were around 26,000 stored collections. The collection is in the form of vinyl records, tapes, CDs, VCDs, musical instruments, magazines, books both domestically or abroad. These domestic collections are categorized by province, and those abroad are categorized by country. Besides that there are also those that are categorized based on the genre. All existing collections are still in good condition and playable.

Most of the collections at the Indonesian Music Museum collected from donors of music lovers and collectors, both citizens and foreigners. As time went on, the collections continued to grow. Sources of collections come from various circles, communities, ordinary citizens to music artists and the Cultural Agency. [3] 60-70% of the collections are from Indonesian musicians, and the rest are foreign musicians from Europe to Latin America. Collections which is collected are noted with a serial number, date of donation, name and address of the donor, and the year of production.

The first donation was two Gombloh tapes, then came the contribution of the founders of GMB. After that, subsequent donations were the special vinyl record of the Dara Puspita group entitled Jang Pertama, the production of Mesra Records in 1969. Afterwards, vinyl record of Elvis Presley's music was also donated.

One of interesting collection here is an ancient musical instrument called Okarina. The Okarina is one of the oldest musical instruments available at this museum. This instrument is believed to have existed since the Stone Age about 12,000 years ago, this object was found from various cultures with many variations. In Indonesia, Okarina is made of clay.

Genres of stored collections are various, there is pop, rock, jazz, Latin, folk songs, and so on. When searching one by one shelf and cupboard collection, can be found names of singers, vocal groups and bands that still exists or at least people still listening to their songs until now. Some collections are quite rare and truly valuable. Like tapes from the 1950s and vinyls from 1924. All existing collections are still in good condition and playable.
