Inez Baranay (born 1949) is a contemporary writer who has worked in numerous countries and published more than 10 books ranging from memoir, biography, short stories, and novels.
Life
Baranay was born in Naples, Italy, to Hungarian parents. Her family moved to Australia when she was still a baby. She grew up in Sydney's western suburbs before moving to the inner city. As a teenager, she lived in Malaysia, where her father was posted in the RAAF.
As an adult, she began her travels to Bali in the 1970s and has since travelled to Europe, Morocco, Turkey, America, and India. In the 1990s, she spent a year in Papua New Guinea with Australian Volunteers Abroad (AVA). This year is the subject of her book Rascal Rain. She completed a PhD in Writing at Griffith University in 2003. She has taught creative writing in many different contexts, including universities, community groups, and prisons, since 1989. She currently resides in inner Sydney.
Many of her books are concerned with travel, tourism, and global cultures. She identifies as a transnational writer, and such themes emanate through her works.

- 1983 – Australia Council Literature Board Grant for general writing
- 1985 – Australia Council Literature Board Fellowship for new writers
- 2002 – Recipient of the Asialink Arts Exchanges Program for residency in India
- 2007 – Australia Council B. R. Whiting Fellowship for a six-month residency at the B. R. Whiting Library in Rome, Italy
- 2020 – Longlisted for the Colin Roderick Award for her 2019 novel Turn Left at Venus
