InfoCons[edit]

InfoCons is a non-governmental organization (NGO), a non-profit Consumer Protection Association with a distinct and indivisible heritage, based on democratic principles that protect consumer rights. InfoCons was founded in 2003 to serve the needs of Romanian consumers. Since its establishment, the Association continues an uninterrupted activity gaining national and international recognition, becoming a member of various organizations, advisory commissions of state authorities, working groups, but also a partner in developing national and international programs of interest to consumers. To fulfill its purpose and mission, InfoCons has developed collaborative relationships and partnerships with similar organizations internationally.

Objectives[edit]

The representative objectives of the InfoCons Association's development programs are to protect consumers from the risks of buying or using products of questionable quality, to inform consumers about products that may be harmful to their health, to encourage consumers to exercise their right to choose, and and the resolution of the notifications is formulated by them. From a consumer perspective, labels and in particular eco-labels are tools that influence the best environmental and food safety decisions. Successful achievement of these objectives involves understanding the market context, namely sustainable consumption and production, the circular economy, as well as understanding the policies and instruments used by the European Union.

Some of the objectives of the InfoCons Association are:

  • Informing consumers about their rights and the legal means by which they can defend their rights and interests as consumers;
  • Informing the public opinion, through the media, about the quality deficiencies of some products and / or services;
  • Prevention of illegal commercial practices and misleading advertising, which affects the rights and interests of consumers;
  • Informing the competent authorities of the presence on the market of products that do not comply with health or safety standards endangers the lives of consumers and of illegal commercial practices applied by traders, in their relationship with consumers;
  • The demand of various operators to provide products and services with certain special conditions, to serve people with disabilities or the elderly;
  • Contributions to the promotion of a transparent and secure market, based on effective protection and well-defined consumer rights;
  • Effective protection of consumers from risks and threats against which they cannot defend themselves as individuals.

InfoCons has been registered in the Unique Register of Information Transparency since 2017.[1]

Relevant activities[edit]

The relevant activities of the InfoCons Association in the fields related to informing people about consumer protection are:

  • Organizing Consumer Consulting and Information Centers[9] in all counties of the country and undertaking a continuous activity in the areas of consumer education and information, as well as implementing the short number 0219615, which consumers can call to obtain useful information about their rights and how I can file a complaint;
  • Contributions to the organization of a first master's course in the field of consumer protection in cooperation with the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work at the University of Bucharest; active involvement in the fight against counterfeit products, as they can be dangerous for consumers or the environment;
  • Organizing free courses for teachers on consumer protection, financial-banking and financial-non-banking;
  • Supporting specialized publications;
  • Development of numerous consumer education and information campaigns under the umbrella of the project "Consumer Protection - Attitude" in various fields, such as: health, environment, finance, tourism, passenger rights, energy. These campaigns are carried out with the help of presentation clips on most national television and radio stations. Also, during these campaigns, materials were disseminated at national level through its own "Info EU-RO" network. This network includes state institutions at national and local level, such as: town halls, ministries, school inspectorates, police stations, hospitals, airports, etc. In the promotion campaigns, information was disseminated through posters, leaflets, bookmarks or on the occasion of organizing events at national, regional and local level. In this context, we can say that the InfoCons Association is familiar with the interests of market players, their behavior and their expectations regarding consumer and environmental protection.
  • Development of projects for people with disabilities such as: accessibility kits in braille, emergency number 113 for people with disabilities, especially hearing.

As a partner in EU projects, InfoCons has been actively involved in the development of educational materials aimed at assessing and monitoring the environment and the social impact of various products. In order to achieve its goals and mission, the InfoCons Association conducts studies and research in the field of environmental and consumer protection, in particular on better management of funds to eliminate food waste. At the moment, InfoCons is involved in several specific activities within the European projects in which it has the quality of beneficiary.

Human resources[edit]

The InfoCons Association has over 65,000 members, and some of them contribute to support the current activities of the Association.

In order to fulfill its objectives, the InfoCons Association has an organizational chart that includes employees for a determined and indefinite period, with academic studies, experts in different fields of interest.
