Insomnia Gaming Festival

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Insomnia Gaming Festival (commonly referenced to as simply Insomnia) is a British gaming festival run by Player1 Events a sub brand of Game UK. It is held twice a year, in April[1] and August[2], in the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. As of July 2019, the festival is on its 65th rendition, known as Insomnia65 (i65). Insomnia was originally located at the Newbury Racecourse from Insomnia5 to Insomnia33, then moved to Stoneleigh Park for Insomnia34, followed by a move back to the racecourse. The event then moved to the Telford International Centre for the 43rd-50th events, and then went to the Ricoh Arena for Insomnia51-Insomnia55. The event has since settled down at the NEC.[3]

Exhibition[edit]

The main exhibition at Insomnia usually consists of various PC/gaming console hardware manufacturers[4], and game developers who are eager for consumers to try their games.[5] The exhibition usually also features a marketplace, where sellers of various video game and geek-culture related memorabilia can hire a space to sell their goods.[6]

BYOC[edit]

Each Insomnia event typically also consists of a BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer/Console) hall[7], where around 2,500 gamers pay for an allotted desk space, a power socket and Ethernet connection to the LAN (local area network)[8], which is where the short name LAN comes from. [9]

Celebrity appearances[edit]

Insomnia also features several "meet and greet"[10] opportunities, where fans of various YouTube stars can go and meet them, usually to take photographs. YouTube stars such as WillNE[10] and JackSucksAtLife [11] have been seen at previous Insomnia events.

Main stage[edit]

The main stage at Insomnia is where most of the scheduled activities take place. This can include shows like the popular The Dark Room show, hosted by John Robertson.[12]

Esports[edit]

Insomnia also features several esports tournaments, mostly under the GAME Belong branding.[13][14] These tournaments usually have cash prizes[13], and feature games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2.[13]
