Inspiration is a touring exhibition train created as part of Railway 200, the national campaign celebrating the 200th anniversary of the modern railway in Britain. Operated by GB Railfreight on behalf of Network Rail, the train comprises four reconfigured Mark 3 coaches and tours England, Scotland and Wales to showcase the history, present and future of rail transport in Great Britain.
The train is scheduled to visit approximately 60 locations across Britain over a 12-month period, concluding in Summer 2026.[1][2] By March 2026, more than 70,000 people had visited the train.[3]
Development and funding
The four Mark 3 coaches were procured by Network Rail and refitted for exhibition use.[4] The fit-out was supported by a £250,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.[5] The train's external livery was funded by rolling stock company Porterbrook.[6]
The exhibition was curated in partnership with the National Railway Museum and formally launched on 26 June 2025 at London Paddington station. It first opened to the public at the Severn Valley Railway on 27 June 2025.[7][8]
Exhibition content
The train features four themed carriages:[9][10]
- Railway Firsts: curated by the National Railway Museum, this carriage explores groundbreaking innovations in railway history, highlighting landmark moments in the development of rail transport.
- Wonderlab on Wheels: offering hands-on engineering exhibits and interactive activities adapted from the National Railway Museum's Wonderlab gallery, this carriage allows visitors to test their engineering skills.
- Your Railway Future: this carriage showcases career opportunities in the rail industry, including lesser-known roles, and aims to encourage visitors to consider careers that will shape the next 200 years of rail.
- Partner Zone: This carriage provides free, flexible exhibition space for industry partners and collaborating organisations.
In October 2025, a 360-degree virtual tour was launched to allow people unable to visit in person to explore the exhibition online. The virtual tour comprises 90 ultra-high-definition photographs and features online-exclusive content from National Railway Museum curators.[11] A free multilingual digital guide is available through the Bloomberg Connects app, usable both during in-person visits and at home.
