The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) is an English language arts publishing company based out of Locust Grove, Oklahoma, that offers curricula for students of all ages and levels of ability, including students with learning differences and English-language learners.[1] The company’s mission is “to equip teachers and teaching parents with methods and materials that will aid them in training their students to become confident and competent communicators and thinkers.”[2]
History[edit]
The Institute for Excellence in Writing was officially founded in 1994 by Andrew Pudewa, who based the curriculum on a method of teaching originally developed through the combined works of Dalhousie University professor Dr. James B. Webster[3] and Order of Canada member Mrs. Anna Ingham.[4][5]
Pudewa moved his family and business from California to Oklahoma in 2009, and the company is currently headquartered in Locust Grove, Oklahoma.[6]
In 2013 IEW launched its annual Twelve Days of Christmas Giving promotion, offering free digital gifts to educators and teaching parents.[7] On the twelfth day of the promotion, IEW sends a physical gift, typically one of its products.[8]
In 2023 IEW partnered with Hillsdale K-12 (Hillsdale College) to create a writing curriculum for their students in third through eighth grade.[9]
In addition to publishing language arts curricula, IEW also sponsors an international writing contest.[10] Winners receive a cash prize while their parents win a gift certificate to purchase IEW curricula.[11]
IEW will host its first worldwide speech contest in 2023 for ages 12-16 with cash prizes for winning competitors.[12]
