The Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a multidisciplinary scientific research institute at the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. Established in 2000, the institute conducts fundamental and translational research in molecular biosciences, with a focus on understanding biological systems and developing applications in human health, biotechnology, agriculture, and the environment.[1]

History

Planning for a major molecular bioscience institute at the University of Queensland began in the late 1990s, supported by the Queensland Government and UQ.[2]

The Institute for Molecular Bioscience was officially established in January 2000 through the merger of the Centre for Molecular and Cellular Biology and the Centre for Drug Design and Development.[3]

The Queensland Bioscience Precinct, which houses IMB and partner organisations, opened in 2003.[4]

Research

IMB's research focuses on chemical and structural biology, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, molecular medicine, and drug discovery.[5]

Research themes include chronic inflammation, rare diseases, cancer, antimicrobial resistance, and metabolic disorders.

The institute includes centres such as:

  • Centre for Superbug Solutions
  • Centre for Inflammation and Disease Research
  • Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy

Impact and commercialisation

IMB has a strong record of industry collaboration and commercialisation, with more than A$3 billion in investment based on IMB-developed intellectual property.[6]

Breakthroughs include venom-derived therapeutics, anti-inflammatory drug candidates, and biological tools for invasive species control.[7]

Facilities

IMB is located within the Queensland Bioscience Precinct at UQ’s St Lucia campus. Its facilities include:

  • Advanced imaging and microscopy
  • Proteomics and mass spectrometry platforms
  • High-throughput chemical screening
  • Genome editing and sequencing
  • Computational biology and bioinformatics

Awards and recognition

IMB researchers have received major national and international awards, including ARC Laureate Fellowships, Eureka Prizes, and recognition from global scientific bodies.[8]
