The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge (formerly the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge) is a research institution located in Chicago, Illinois, at the University of Chicago. It is the first research institution in the world dedicated to epistemology, and seeks to examine the historical, social, and intellectual circumstances that give rise to different kinds of knowledge and to assess how this knowledge shapes the modern world. Due to its discipline-agnostic nature, it is not housed within any of the University’s divisions, and answers to the Provost of the University.
History
The Institute on the Formation of Knowledge was established in April 2015. It is the first research institute devoted to the study of epistemology in any university and joined other interdisciplinary programs at the University of Chicago, including the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society and the Franke Institute for the Humanities.
It seeks to bring together scholars of different academic disciplines, with the aim of studying how knowledge in different fields has been created and transmitted from antiquity to the present.[1], and provides funding for University of Chicago faculty and visiting scholars, affiliated PhD students, and post-doctoral scholars to support their research[2]. Its research is guided by a research theme that is updated every two years. For 2016-2018, the research theme is Comparing Practices of Knowledge[3].
In October 2017, the Institute moved into a newly renovated, purpose-built building at 5737 South University Avenue[4]. It held its inaugural conference, featuring 40 speakers from a wide range of academic fields, in November 2017[5].
Leadership
Shadi Bartsch-Zimmer, the Helen A. Regenstein Distinguished Service Professor of Classics at the University of Chicago, was appointed in April 2015 as the first faculty director of the Institute for a three-year term. The Steering Committee of the Institute comprises the faculty director, Clifford Ando, Robert Richards, and Haun Saussy[6]
Academics
Faculty members of the Institute conduct seminars and courses for undergraduate and graduate students of the University of Chicago[7]. The Institute also organizes workshops, seminars, and lectures on a regular basis throughout the year[8]
Publications
The Institute publishes the findings of its research in its flagship publication, an academic journal titled KNOW[9], which was first published by the University of Chicago Press in spring 2017. KNOW publishes research by academics and researchers from the University of Chicago and other universities around the world that seeks to challenge the assumption that modern disciplines are a natural division of forms of knowledge and emphasize the contextual, historical, political, and social basis of all forms of knowledge.
The Institute also regularly publishes blogs and op-ed pieces, and has commissioned essays in The New York Times[10].
