Insurance King is a car insurance agency based in Rockford, Illinois. Insurance King currently writes car insurance quotes for 10 states, mainly in the East Coast. The insurance agency sells quotes through phone calls with agents and in-person. The agency is currently owned by current CEO, Dan Block. Their mascot is a lion named Leon. The slogan for the agency is "Drive Legal for Less." The agency was first a division of Nyman Advisors, Inc. from 2000 to 2003, then Northern Illinois Insurance Services from 2003 to 2007. After 2007, Insurance King would operate as its own business.
Insurance King offers quotes mainly for car insurance, but also for SR-22 insurance, motorcycle insurance, and roadside assistance. The agency currently writes in 11 states. The agency is also currently licensed in Alabama, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania, but currently is hoping to write in the future. All physical locations at the moment are in the state of Illinois, but future physical locations are being built in Tennessee, scheduled to open in 2022.[1]
History
The agency was influenced by co-founder Daniel Block's experiences with finding low cost auto insurance. When Daniel was 18, he was involved in an auto accident that would force him to being dropped from his parents' policy and forcing him to find his own insurance- the cheapest being $480 a month, $50 more than the payment for his car, a 1995 Ford Mustang. In 2000, Dan would become an insurance agent for a competing company, when he would find out about lower insurance rates through different insurance carriers- something that fascinated Dan. In the same year, he would meet Scot Nyman, who had already started his own insurance agency. While eating lunch with Scot, Dan would create Insurance King.[2]
The agency was founded by Scot Nyman and now current CEO of Insurance King, Dan Block on January 1, 2000 as Nyman Advisors, Inc. in Rockford, Illinois as a division of Nyman's companies at the time.[3] According to their official website, in 2001, a car lot dealer, Don Courtney of National Auto Sales, had called the agency and asked for the "Insurance King", referring to the company. He reportably had said to Dan, after Dan had thought he had called the wrong place "No, the kid is the king of insurance and has great rates for his customers!" The name stuck with founder Dan Block, and decided to rename the agency to Insurance King since then.[1][4] The name first appeared on business cards in 2001, and has been used ever since.
In 2003, Dan had decided to buy both divisions of Nyman's agency, thus making Dan have total control of the agency. Nyman's agency was now renamed Northern Illinois Insurance Services. The company was not a business as of yet- it was currently a division of Northern Illinois Insurance Services. A second division existed during this time, mainly catering to white collar workers. It wasn't until 2007, when two things happened: Daniel had noticed the growth of the division of Insurance King, and the fact that another similarly named company, Northern Illinois Insurance Agency, Inc., had been under investigation for wire fraud and mail fraud,[5] that he decided to rename the agency to Insurance King and make Insurance King its own business.
Also in 2003, Dan was invited by Karen A. Yarbrough, at the time the state representive for Illinois's 7th congressional district to testify as an expert for SR-22 insurance on November 5, 2003 in the William G. Stratton Building in Springfield, Illinois for the matter of "the establishment for a tacking method of valid auto insurance."[6]
From 2007-2017, Dan Block would appear in numerous commercials for different states. The ads would run from 15-30 seconds and covered a variety of topics, including laws, testimonies, announcing new states the agency was in, and a drunk driving PSA. From 2018 onwards, Dan would stop appearing in commercials and hire celebrities and figures to help promote the agency. A new jingle was created during that was inspired by Monty Python, which encouraged getting car insurance, telling the government to "bugger off" and ending with "Call the Insurance King!"[7]
In 2012, Dan had saw national TV commercials from numerous national insurance companies, and realized that the agency couldn't just stick to Rockford. So, he would began to hatch a plan over the internet and phone and started to expand by May 2013. By December of that year, the agency had saw nearly double in premium sales.
In 2013, the agency would partner with Lighthouse Casualty Company, to become one of Insurance King's insurance carriers. The company is mainly focused on teen to mid-twenties drivers.[8]
In 2016, the agency would report on Facebook that they had doubled their staff for the third consecutive year, starting in 2014 because they needed "to handle the volume of customer service needs".[9]

On August 13, 2018, Insurance King would open up their first physical location for the first time outside of Rockford, in Peoria, Illinois.[10] To help the promotion of the location, Dan would sign Dustin Diamond, actor from Saved by the Bell to do multiple commercials in shoots for the company- with some of them reviving Dustin's character from the show, Screech Powers.[11]
On August 11, 2020, the headquarters for the company would get hit by a tornado and the power for the building went out. The location would open shortly after.[12]
As of 2021, Insurance King currently is licensed in 13 states and currently writes insurance in 10 states. It is scheduled to be licensed to do insurance in it's first West Coast state, California, sometime in the future. As of now, all of Insurance King's offices are run by corporate. All buildings are modeled to look like castles, both on the outside and the inside to help better complete the "king" theme. While they write in 10 states, the agency only has five physical locations, all in Illinois; three in Rockford, Illinois, one in Peoria, Illinois, and one in Decatur, Illinois.[1][13] Future locations are planned to be built, with one currently being built in Memphis, Tennessee[14] and another four planned to be built, with one confirmed in Chicagoland, Illinois.[15]
Lawsuits
Insurance King has made two lawsuits, with one settled.
The first lawsuit focused on Rancho Cucamonga, California-based car insurance company Just Auto Insurance, Inc. for trademark infringement in the case Insurance King Agency, Inc. vs. Just Auto Insurance Inc. According to the case, it was found that Just Auto Insurance had a mascot similar to Insurance King's, a cartoon lion and that they had called themselves "The King of Insurance." In the end, the case settled with injunctive relief for Insurance King. The court ordered Just Auto Insurance to stop using the lion as its mascot and to stop using the trademark.[16][17]
A second lawsuit was filed on August 31, 2021 against Digital Media Solutions, LLC. in the case Insurance King Agency, Inc. v. Digital Media Solutions, LLC et al.[18]
Sponsorship
Advertising campaigns
Insurance Geek
In 2004, the first known campaign was launched, featuring the "Insurance Geek", played by Dan's brother, Dave Block. Two commercials are known to existed featuring Dave; one with him being a rabbit in a magic trick saying "Insurance doesn't have my magic- call Insurance King today!", and the other with a checkers match with a player being kinged, with the other saying "King you!" Out of nowhere, a lion appears, followed by the opponent falling out of his chair out of surprise, and ending with the Insurance Geek saying "You just got kinged! Are you playing the no insurance game? That's a game you don't wanna play, call the Insurance King today!"[19]
Pop culture parodies
Insurance King has had a variety of commercials parodying pop culture and movies. The first known commercial was made in 2006, parodying Back to the Future, and was first shown on WREX. The commercial is known for its poor quality CGI, with one scene having a dinosaur being pushed by a visible hand, chasing a woman.[20]
The official jingle of Insurance King, also made in 2006, was inspired by Monty Python. An official animation was put out in 2011, with the animation having a medieval setting.[7]
In 2018, the agency would make a reference to the pumpkin in Cinderella, with Cinderella and her boyfriend stating that their cars had turned into pumpkins due to the fact that HB-2610, a law that the Illinois General Assembly passed that stated that the state would verify all car insurance electronically to help catch uninsured drivers.[21]
Celebrities
From 2018-2020, Insurance King has worked with Dustin Diamond, Michael Winslow, Mr. TalkBox, Ed Bassmaster, and more celebrities to do promotional stunts and commercials for the agency.
Dustin Diamond: Diamond would first appear in commercials in 2018, when Insurance King opened up their first location outside of Rockford, Illinois, this time in Peoria, Illinois.[11][22] Until his death in 2021, Diamond would appear in multiple commercials for Insurance King. Some commercials included him being a terrible barber,[23] in a Western-style stand-off,[24] and four commercials of him playing with sock puppets.[25] He would mainly promote Insurance King's "minimum coverage", typically shown by Diamond wearing nothing but a tanktop and underwear.[26][27] In other commercials, he would reprise his character from Saved by the Bell, Screech Powers.[28] He also has done a commercial with UFC fighter Spencer "The King" Fisher, in which he gets beat up by Fisher for calling himself "The King of the Cage".[29]
Dan Block was close friends with Diamond, and when Diamond was in the hospital, Dan encouraged fans to send fan letters to him to donate to Diamond.[28] When Diamond died, Dan said "He thought he would have a few more weeks or months. He thought five months... I had heard on [Thursday] morning that they called 911 because his breathing was really shallow and when they got him to the hospital... he was jaundiced... and found fluid in his lungs. It was really bad... Sunday he was saying some words but that was it. I knew I had to fly down to see him... I just thought 'Oh my God"... it was so hard to see him like that, poor Dustin."[30] Dan would make a tribute video to Diamond, featuring special behind the scenes clips and his commercials with Insurance King.[31] Dan would comment on Dustin's "wicked sense of humor", saying "He used to say 'trust the dust.' It's kind of funny because now he's dust," referring to Diamond's final wish of being cremated.[32]
A statement from Dan Block, posted on a back of a tribute hero card dedicated to Dustin Diamond.
Todd Bridges: In 2020, actor Todd Bridges, and Tiger King stars John Reinke and Saff Saffery shot five commercials together, with Bridges playing Joe Exotic.[33][34] In other commercials, he is shown saying that Insurance King gives different quotes for everyone, depending on their situation, saying "Diff'rent quotes for diff'rent folks!", referencing Diff'rent Strokes.[35]
Michael Winslow: Since 2018, Michael Winslow has done numerous ads for Insurance King, usually with Winslow doing various sound effects by himself. In certain commercials, he has reprised his part as a radar technician from the 1987 space opera parody Spaceballs, with Winslow, instead of a radar, handling phone lines as customer service.[36][37]
Ed Bassmaster: On numerous occasions, Bassmaster has played several of his characters for commercial shoots and pranks sponsored by the agency, mostly Chip Diamond. On one occasion, he was sponsored to do a video called "Psh Nascar..", a reference to Diamond's catchphrase, "Psh!" At the 2019 Indiana 250, he was shown going around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, seeming disinterested in the race and thinking he was better than everyone at the track. Eventually, during the driver's meeting, NASCAR went up to Bassmaster, and told him to get out of the track. Afterwards, Bassmaster would confirm that he was banned from NASCAR for life. In response, Bassmaster (playing Diamond) would say "Like I give a rat's ass!"[38][39] In other videos, he is shown encouraging people to get car insurance, as he thinks that people who don't have car insurance are "unreal".[40]
Mr. TalkBox: In partnership with Mr. TalkBox, Insurance King has sponsored him to do multiple covers of songs, including Word Up!,[41] Say So,[42] You Dropped a Bomb on Me,[43] Somebody's Watching Me,[44] Super Freak,[45] and She's a Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked).[46]
Willie Tyler and Lester: The ventriloquist duo have done two known commercials for Insurance King. One was with a couple talking about how they didn't have car insurance, with Lester saying "Even a dummy like me knows you have to have car insurance!" When Willie berates him for calling people dummies, Lester says in response "Really?! I've been called a dummy all my life!"[47]
In a second commercial, the duo parodied Saw.[48]
NASCAR sponsorship with Josh Bilicki, first insurance agency to sponsor in NASCAR
In 2019, for the 2019 Camping World 300 at Chicagoland Speedway for the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Wisconsin born native Josh Bilicki had asked Insurance King over a Facebook message, asking if the agency wanted to sponsor him in the #93 RSS Racing Chevrolet. The agency did after Block asked Jordan Belfort if he should,[49] and Bilicki would run the car for the race, albeit failing to qualify.[50] The first race with Insurance King decals happened at the 2019 Camping World 400, also happening at Chicagoland where Bilicki, this time running the 53 car for Rick Ware Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, where Bilicki finished 33rd out of 38 cars. Insurance King was the first ever insurance agency to sponsor a car. The agency would run 5 more times with Bilicki, with 4 in the Xfinity Series and 1 in the Cup Series that year. In that same year, Insurance King would sponsor Ed Bassmaster to make a video for them at the 2019 Indiana 250, called "Psh Nascar.." where Insurance King had also sponsored Bilicki for that race. Ed, playing as "Chip Diamond", would get thrown out of the race for being a nuisance to fans and officials and was banned for life from attending any other NASCAR event.[39] In the 2019 Drive for the Cure 250, the agency would run a special paint scheme featuring Todd Bamberger, who was killed when a drunk driver crashed into Todd while running from a Sheriff Deputy.[51][52]
For 2020, their sponsorship grew to the agency sponsoring Bilicki for numerous races, starting at the 2020 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. Throughout the season, they would have multiple themes with their paint schemes. These include a partnership with Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick (with a black and white checkered car, symbolizing Rick Nielsen's preferred clothing design he likes to wear)[53][54] The Wounded Blue (with two designs: once featuring a thin blue line flag[55] and another with a police car themed design[56]), a patriotic scheme,[57] and a throwback to Tom Baldwin.[58]
In 2021, they would once again sponsor Bilicki for numerous races, starting at the 2021 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 with a "Got Tickets?" theme, with police lights on the roof of the car.[59] They would once again run numerous themes, with another police car design,[60] a tribute to Lennie Pond,[61] a patriotic scheme for the Xfinity Road America race,[62] and a Dustin Diamond (who had worked with Insurance King in the past to make commercials) tribute, with a special Saved by the Bell design (instead of Saved by the Bell, the decals say Saved by the King!") for the 2021 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.[63][64]
In 2021, Insurance King would launch their "Got Tickets?" campaign at the 2021 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 with driver Josh Bilicki. Their first race with the campaign featured a car with police lights (albeit not real lights). Their second race at the 2021 Go Bowling at The Glen had a paint scheme paying an homage to the local Watkins Glen Police Department cars, with the scheme modeled after them.[65] At the 2021 Bank of America Roval 400, the agency ran a special scheme honoring the 20th anniversary of the company.[66]
Since their NASCAR sponsorship, the agency has created numerous "hero cards" to give out to fans, featuring Bilicki and Insurance King. These cards featured various designs, were obtainable by filling out a form or other various methods (including being a Top Fan of their Facebook,[67] donating to the Wounded Blue,[68][69] and buying a special t-shirt[70]), and were only available until stock ran out.
Other
Insurance King has sponsored charity events for the local Rockford IceHogs, including a jersey auction night in 2019.[71]
