The International association of colloid and interface scientists (IACIS) is an international organisation which promotes international cooperation among colloid and interface scientists, and aims to encourage advancement and understanding in the field of colloid and interface science. It is best known for organising an international scientific conference on colloid and interface science every 3 years.

History[edit]

In the 1970's Interface and colloid science was actively studied by several research groups in different countries. Despite this, there was no overarching organisation which organized local or international conferences or which promoted the science. This led to the creation of an international newsletter in 1977 with the aim of promoting international cooperation in the field of colloid and interface science. This newsletter was edited by Hans Lyklema until 2009, and is brought out regularly to this day.[1][2]

With this newsletter as basis, IACIS was founded two years later at August 24, 1979 in Stallmastargarden Restaurant in Stockholm. The founding members were Alexi Scheludko (Bulgaria), Boris Deryagin (USSR), Hans Lyklema (Netherlands), Tom Healy (Australia), Geoff Parfitt (USA), Lisbeth Ter-Minassian-Saraga (France), Erwin Wolfram (Hungary), Per Stenius (Sweden), Armin Weiss (West Germany), Božo Tezak (Croatia, Yugoslavia), Egon Matijevic (USA), Eiji Suito (Japan), Alex Silberberg (Israel), Gabor Somorjai (USA) and Hans-Otto Becker (West Germany).[3]

During the first meeting, it was decided that the association goals were:

  • to promote international cooperation among colloid and interface scientists,
  • to encourage advancement and understanding in the field of colloid and interface science.

These objectives would be achieved through triennial international meetings (IACIS conferences). In addition the newsletter was taken up as part of IACIS.

A standing office of IACIS was established in 1981 at the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands.
