International Clash Day
International Clash Day is an international holiday that honors and celebrates the legendary punk rock band The Clash. Numerous radio stations in several countries[1] observe the holiday by playing Clash songs and conducting relevant interviews throughout the day.
International Clash Day is celebrated by government proclamations.
The holiday began on February 7th, 2013, when John Richards, a host and producer at Seattle radio station KEXP played Clash songs throughout the morning.[2][3][4] The holiday has since been recognized via official proclamations from numerous cities including Seattle, Vancouver, Washington, D.C., Kent, OH[5] and Austin, Texas, as well as the state of Washington.[6]
International Clash Day is celebrated on February 7th, unless February 7th is a Saturday or Sunday. International Clash Day is never celebrated on a Saturday or Sunday.
Washington State Governor, the Honorable Jay Inslee made the following proclamation to observe International Clash Day 2018:
"Hey, this is Jay Inslee, Governor of Washington, the greatest state in the nation. In this state, we celebrate Diversity, Tolerance, and Compassion for all. We stand up with our global brothers and sisters with one voice and resist the small minds that attempt to divide us. We are proud to be the home of creative souls throughout our musical history, from Hendrix to Nirvana. And that's why we join with KEXP in proclaiming February 7th International Clash Day and celebrating our role in the history of rebellious rock and roll. Now let's rock the Casbah."
When a city, state, or country issues a proclamation observing International Clash Day, John Richards reads the proclamation on his radio show.
In addition to radio stations in the US that observe International Clash Day, radio stations in other countries also participate. For example, a radio station as far away as China observes International Clash Day.
Although known as International Clash Day, the amount of on-air promotion leading up to the day is such that, it could almost be called International Clash Week. http://internationalclashday.com/
