The International Journal of Nuclear Security (IJNS) is an annual peer-reviewed academic journal covering research in nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, and nuclear security. It is published open access with Elsevier through the University of Tennessee’s Institute for Nuclear Security. IJNS published its first volume in 2015 and is the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s oldest academic journal.[1] In addition to annual peer-reviewed journal volumes, IJNS has published special issues and book reviews on relevant subjects.
History
IJNS was created in 2015 to establish a peer-reviewed open access platform for international nuclear security research. It was founded by Dr. Howard Hall, the director of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Institute for Nuclear Security. The journal was edited by Dr. Russel Hirst from 2015 to 2022, who oversaw the publication of volumes 1 through 7. It was subsequently edited by Rachel Brooks from 2022 to 2025, leading volumes 8 and 9. Jackson Stanley became the current editor in 2025. IJNS has published approximately 200 articles across nine volumes since 2015.
