International Microorganism Day (IMD) is observed annually on 17 September since 2017. Each year, activities and events take place to raise societal awareness on the role played by microorganisms in our lives, including topics such as One Health perspective, sustainability and environmental issues, as well as the biotechnological and applied potential of microorganisms. Several Science outreach events hosted during this day seek involvement of the public with microbiology.
History[edit]
The International Microorganism Day was first developed by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology.[1] in 2017, as an initiative to make the society aware of the importance of microorganisms. September 17 was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the day on 1683 when Dutch businessman and scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, considered as the “Father of Microbiology”, sent a letter with the first description and drawings of a single-celled organism to the Royal Society of London.[2]
2017 – First Edition[edit]
The first edition of the International Microbiology day took place in Pavilhão do Conhecimento, Lisbon, organized by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology together with several public entities and private Institutes.
2018 – Second Edition[edit]
The second edition of the International Microorganism Day took place in several cities across Portugal and participating countries, in collaboration with the Ordem dos Biólogos, the Agência Ciência Viva, the Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecologia and high patronage of the Portuguese National Commission for UNESCO. The two main topics of this edition were “Microbes and the fascination for the invisible” and “Microorganisms, Bioeconomy and Sustainable Development”[3]
2019 – Third Edition[edit]
For the third edition, several activities were planned internationally both in Europe and Latin America. Including, conferences, exhibitions, training workshops[4] and art comptetitions (p. e. MicrobeArt [5]). For more information consult the IMD webpage [6] or social networks [7][8][9]
