International Muslim History Month (IMHM) is an annual celebration that takes place in the month of May to commemorate the contributions and achievements of Muslims throughout history. IMHM was founded in 2021 by Nazma Khan, the founder and CEO of the non-profit organization, World Hijab Day.[1]
History[edit]
The idea for IMHM came about as a response to the rising levels of Islamophobia,[2] and negative stereotyping of Muslims in the media,[3] and other public spheres. The aim of IMHM is to promote understanding and appreciation of the Muslim culture, history, and traditions and to celebrate the significant contributions made by Muslims in various fields.
IMHM has been recognized by the New York State Senate since 2021, with the passage of resolutions commending its efforts to combat Islamophobia and promote cultural awareness and understanding.[4][5][6] These resolutions acknowledge the important role that IMHM plays in raising awareness about the contributions of Muslims throughout history and in promoting a more inclusive and tolerant society.
During International Muslim History Month, events are organized by educational institutions[which?], community groups, and individuals in several countries. These events aim to showcase the cultural heritage of Muslims and highlight the significant contributions made by Muslims in fields such as science, the arts, literature, and technology.
