The International Observatory of Human Rights (also known as IOHR) is a London-based non-governmental organization focused on exposing human rights violations worldwide. It conducts advocacy and awareness campaigns to expose human rights violations around the world.[1]
The mission of the organization is to advocate and raise awareness about human rights. IOHR’s motto is “Putting Human Rights Info Focus”.[2]
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, international treaties and human rights laws represent the core instruments IOHR relies on when campaigning for a world that ensures human rights for all.
IOHR has launched an advanced multimedia platform including one of the first human rights web TV channels specialized in broadcasting stories of injustice and topical issues related to prisoners of conscience, press freedom, arbitrary detentions, the refugee crisis, the dangers of extremism and radicalism, social injustice, and violations of international law.
Established in November 2017, the International Observatory of Human Rights is led and founded by Miss Valerie Peay who is also a Trustee Director of the Royal Caledonian Educational Trust in Scotland.[3]
Campaigns
#BeARefugeeSponsor
IOHR launched the #BeARefugeeSponsor campaign to call for the expansion of the UK Community Sponsorship of the Syrian Refugees scheme. The campaign was launched at an event at Westminster in February 2018: The Benefits of Community Sponsorship of Syrian Refugees [4] to expand on in-house primary research based on best practice in Canada. The event brought together leading Canadian and UK practitioners in community sponsorship and IOHR TV was on hand to bring the learning and debate to a wider audience. From this, IOHR went on to develop the campaign with partners[5] such as Sponsor Refugees and Citizens UK. The event raised awareness of Community sponsorship and the opportunities to expand and diversify the resettlement scheme.
In June 2018, IOHR held a second event at City Hall, launching #WorkWellRefugees[6], in partnership with the Greater London Authority [7]. The event brought together more than twenty-five business leaders, public sector policy makers, refugees and non-governmental organisations to discuss how to include more refugees in the UK workplace.
Most recently in August 2018, IOHR held a third event in the #BeARefugeeSponsor series to bring the world’s attention back to the importance of Community Sponsorship. The event, Tima Kurdi in Conversation: From the Boy on the Beach to Safe Harbour, was held at the National Liberal Club and also marked the announcement of a partnership with the Kurdi Foundation. At the event, IOHR announced the launch of the Helping Hands Fund in which IOHR pledged 5000 Canadian Dollars to the Kurdi Foundation.[8]
On 2 September 2018, IOHR delivered their pledge in person to two refugee camps in Erbil, Kurdistan in Iraq. The donors provided school uniforms to hundreds of refugee children.[9]
#NotBornARadical
IOHR launched the “Not Born A Radical” campaign to address causes of radicalisation and provide a progressive platform for educating and empowering the youth, and engaging returning fighters and prisoners seeking a path to rehabilitation.[10]
The launch of the initiative took place during the International Initiative on the Prevention and Countering of Radicalism and Extremism organized by IOHR at King’s College London on 30th April 2018. Experts from nine nations participated alongside reformed Al Qaeda fighter Hanif Qadir and Theo Padnos, the American journalist kidnapped for two years by Al Nusra Front, the former affiliate of Al Qaeda in Syria. IOHR followed up in September with another forum in partnership with the University of Rostock in Germany titled: Women in Extremism: Causes, Concerns and Consequences in partnership with the University of Rostock in Germany.
As part of the campaign, IOHR is also launching its international prison visit programme seeking an opportunity to conduct, collect and analyse motivational and societal factors causing extremism. This includes main recruitment methods used by international terrorist organisations, with the objective to design strategies for preventing radicalisation and rehabilitating and reintegrating individuals into society.

What does Brexit mean for human rights in the UK? IOHR has started a campaign to track the impact on your human rights within the UK and identify where we need to advocate for protection or change. The countdown to 29 March 2019 when the UK exits the European Union has just entered the final run. Whether you voted for Brexit or not, no one wants ambiguity around their human rights or the legal support that underpins them.[11]
#FreeRouhaniHostages
IOHR researchers have conducted thorough research about Iran’s trend of incarcerating dual citizens on fabricated charges with the aim of using them as bargaining chips to win political gains. IOHR brought together the families of some of those hostages used by Iranian president Hassan Rouhani in a conference hosted by MP Graham Jones to put pressure on the Iranian regime to free dozens of dual citizens, including British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Ratcliffe, Canadian permanent resident Saeed Malekpour, and Swedish academic Ahmed Reza Djalali[12]
In June 2018, IOHR invited Mrs. Vida Mehrannia, the wife of imprisoned Iranian-Swedish professor Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, to Brussels and Strasbourg to appeal for an urgent intervention from diplomats and members of the European Parliament and the Council of Europe the week before President Rouhani’s visit to Austria and Switzerland.[13]
IOHRTV
Award-winning journalists and media professionals affiliated with International Observatory of Human Rights have launched one of the first human rights web TV channels that focuses on stories exposing human rights violations worldwide[14]. The show is anchored by former CNN and Sky presenter Trish Lynch[15] who has hosted a line-up of guests to highlight issues such as the mass incarceration of journalists in Turkey, the Rohingya massacre in Myanmar, homelessness in the UK, jailing of dual nationals in Iran, digital privacy and rights, the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, among other hot topics.
The channel also featured coverage of IOHR’s first forum titled Press Freedom in Turkey, which was held at the Sorbonne University in Paris in February 2018.
IOHRTV show formats include “NGO Focus” a weekly show hosting leading activists and professionals who represent various non-governmental organizations worldwide—a hub to tell the stories of the oppressed, challenge tyranny and promote positive change.
“IOHR Debates” brings together guests from opposite sides of the spectrum to debate and challenge each other on topics dominating our news headlines.
The International Observatory of Human Rights has collaborated with Netgem an award-winning British distributor[16]—a platform that provides a complete software suite enabling a smart way to lifestyle---a launch pad for IOHR videos on more mobile devices using ‘Virtual STB’ software. The IOHRTV mobile app comes with a user-friendly interface to allow easy access to people interested in human rights issues worldwide.
