International TEFL Academy (ITA) is a school offering certification courses for teaching of English as a foreign language (TEFL).[1] both online and in-person at over 20 locations worldwide.[2] It was founded in 2010 and is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, USA[3].

History[edit]

ITA’s president and CEO, Chicago-born Bruce Jones, began working in the field of studying, interning and teaching abroad in 2004 after a near-death experience led him to taking two years off to travel the world.[4].

After working in the field for a few years, Jones and fellow co-founders Ian Davis, John Bentley, and Karen Grant decided to branch out together and create ITA. Their vision was to create a TEFL certification program that allowed people to take their TEFL course part-time, provided job finding guidance and had a robust alumni support network to help students achieve their goals of teaching abroad[5][6].

In 2010, ITA began offering an online 170-hour certification course in teaching English as a foreign language and a 4-week in-person course in Barcelona, Spain. Two years later in 2012, they began offering in-person TEFL courses in Chicago, Illinois and Heredia, Costa Rica in 2012. ITA further expanded in 2013 to offer in-person TEFL courses in over 20 locations worldwide. Seventeen of the 20 locations worldwide are through partnerships with other TEFL course providers.

In 2023, ITA broadened its range of offerings beyond TEFL courses to include guaranteed job placement programs and specialized cultural courses tailored for select countries.

Since its inception, ITA has certified over 45,000 people to teach English as a foreign language[7][8].

Courses[edit]

ITA offers part-time and full-time online TEFL certification courses as well as in-person courses at 20 locations in North America, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

They offer specialty TEFL courses in foundations of English grammar, teaching English online, teaching to young learners, teaching business English, Tutoring English and Teaching Test Prep Skills.

They also offer guaranteed job placement programs in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia, along with online and in-person cultural courses available for Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Spain, and Thailand.

Accreditation[edit]

All courses administered by International TEFL Academy are externally monitored and approved at a Level 5 Ofqual (British Government) accreditation by TQUK (authorized accreditor of Ofqual).

Courses offered at other locations through ITA partner schools are accredited by a variety of well-known accrediting bodies, including the International Accreditation of TESOL Qualifying organizations (IATQuO), Learning Resource Network, Australian International College of Language (AICOL), and School for International Training (SIT). They meet standards similar to those required by Ofqual for a Level 5 Certification.
