International Younger Chemists Network

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN) is an international non-profit organization, and an associated organization of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). It's main focus is on promoting, connecting, supporting and empowering early-career scientists that work within the chemical sciences. The beneficiaries of IYCN are all fulfill at least one of the following criteria: they are currently pursuing a chemistry-related degree (e.g. Bachelors, Masters, PhD), are less than 35-years old, or they have completed a chemistry-related degree or training (e.g. post-doc) during the past 5 years. IYCN aims to support and advocate for younger scientists across the chemical sciences towards a globally sustainable future.

History[edit]

The IYCN started from a task force formed at the 250th American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting in Boston (USA) in 2015. The idea to create an international network of younger chemists was initiated by a group of young scientists based on their experiences from the International Conference for Young Chemists during the International Year of Chemistry in 2011. While there were already existing international collaborations such as the cooperation between the European Young Chemists' Network (EYCN) and the Younger Chemists Committee of the ACS (YCC/ACS) with the Younger Chemists Crossing Border (YCCB) program.[1] and regular exchanges between the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh), there was no real international opportunity for younger chemists to connect worldwide. There was a strong need for such a global-scale platform.
In 2016, some of the founding members of IYCN gathered at the 252nd ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia (USA) and at the 6th EuCheMS Chemistry Congress in Sevilla (Spain). The latter of which featured a soft launch of IYCN as a basis for the future expansion and development of the network[2][3]. In 2017, during the 46th IUPAC World Chemistry Congress (WCC) in São Paulo (Brazil), IYCN was officially launched and became an Associated Organization of IUPAC. IYCN and IUPAC signed a memorandum of understanding to partner together to provide younger chemists a more inclusive environment, advanced networks, improved career development opportunities and a louder voice to express concerns and needs as young scientists. The inaugural IYCN meeting was attended by 20 younger chemists from 13 countries[3][4][5].

From this point onwards, IYCN developed and established itself as an organization to support the needs of younger chemists worldwide. The first General Assembly took place during the 47th WCC in Paris (France) in 2019. During this event, the IYCN’s statutes and bylaws[6] were approved by the delegates. In total, 43 delegates from 33 countries attended the General Assembly[7].

Organization[edit]

The organizational structure of the IYCN.

The legislative body consists of the delegates of represented countries. Each country is entitled to nominate two delegates to IYCN; this is typically done by the National Adhering Organisations (as listed by IUPAC[8]) and, where one does not exist, the chemical societies or national universities must come to a consensus on the nomination of two names. Each country has one vote at the IYCN General Assembly. The delegates constitute the council of IYCN which elects the Chair, Chair-Elect, Treasurer and Secretary of the Executive Board and votes on changes to the statutes and bylaws[6][7].

The executive body consists of the Executive Board and volunteers active in IYCN’s steering committees. Chair, Chair-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary and the Leaders of the steering committees form the Executive Board of IYCN. Currently, IYCN has six steering committees: a) Governance, b) Finance, c) Public Outreach, d) Social Media, e) Conference Presence and f) International Society Liaison. The executive body is working to fulfill the vision and mission of IYCN[6][7].

Committee Name Function
Governance Team The role of the Governance committee is to update the IYCN statutes and bylaws in response to the Delegates and Executive Board, anticipate and resolve questions regarding governance (internal rules, formal relationship with IUPAC and other parties) that guide the actions of the network, and guarantee the continuation of IYCN’s vision and mission.
Finance Team The Finance committee’s goal is to ensure the financial security of IYCN, specifically raising the necessary funds such that projects are sufficiently funded.
Public Outreach

The goal of the Public Outreach committee is to promote the vision of IYCN to the wider chemistry community through the operation of exchange programs, ensuring that chemistry is accessible to all.

Social Media The Social Media committee is in charge of communicating IYCN's vision and ongoing activities to the general public through the IYCN newsletter and social media platforms (i.e. Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook), with the goals to 1) stimulate public interest and support of our activities, 2) help maintain our reputation as a highly active organization through high visibility, and 3) encourage younger chemists around the world to join our network.
Conference Presence The Conference Presence committee's goal is to collaborate with international societies to co-host activities and to share resources to expand our network. Additionally, the aim is to have a presence at conferences through the availability of flyers, oral and poster presentations, and virtually to connect with other young chemists.
International Society Liaison The goal of the International Society Liaison (ISL) committee is to curate a database of partner organizations and individual ambassadors within these organizations that the IYCN may collaborate with.

Projects[edit]

The IYCN works on different projects to support younger chemists globally. The overall aim is to fulfill the mission of IYCN which is: "The IYCN supports and advocates for younger scientists working across the chemical sciences towards a globally sustainable future.

Experiment Competition[edit]

The Public Outreach team hosts an annual experiment competition. The competition awards experiments which can be done with minimal to no specialized equipment. The winning experiments are translated into multiple languages through IYCN's network of volunteers and are made freely available to the public on the website. The first outreach competition was held in 2019 and was focused on climate change, while the 2020 competition was themed around Earth Chemistry[9][10][11].

Global Women’s Breakfast[edit]

IYCN supports and is involved in the organization of some of the IUPAC Global Women's Breakfasts. The event aims to promote women working across the chemical sciences in pursuing their career goals[12][13].

ChemVoices[edit]

ChemVoices is a result of continued collaboration between IYCN and IUPAC and is a legacy project resulting from the Periodic Table of Younger Chemists (PTChemists). The aim of the PTChemists project was to highlight early-career chemists (from high school to established career scientists) with the award of an element for their contribution to the scientific community and their embodiment of IUPAC’s core values by linking them to an interactive Periodic Table. As an extension of this project, members of IYCN and IUPAC are preparing a series of webinars featuring those who were recognized in the Periodic Table. The overall goal of ChemVoices is to provide a platform through which early-career chemists can discuss issues that are relevant, and of immediate concern, to themselves, while simultaneously giving them an opportunity to highlight their impact on the broader scientific community[14].

Quarterly Newsletter[edit]

IYCN publishes a quarterly newsletter which is distributed to all members and the public via e-mail, social media channels and the websites of IUPAC[15] and IYCN[16].

Conference Presence[edit]

The IYCN is strongly represented at international chemistry conferences and congresses by members to promote and spread its vision. The conference presences team provides opportunities for networking and organizing symposia that highlights the work of younger chemists around the world.

Partners[edit]

IYCN collaborates in joint projects with other chemical organizations like the EYCN[17], IUPAC[4][18], Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), GDCh, ACS[19] and Chemists Without Borders (CWB)[20]. Several IUPAC project proposals feature task members from within the IYCN membership database[13][21][22]
