Intersoft Electronics Group

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Intersoft Electronics Group is a Belgian technology holding company specializing in the design, development, and manufacturing of radar technology and Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) equipment and services for the global Air Traffic Management (ATM) and defense sectors.[1].

Established in Olen, Belgium, in 1983, the company is led by CEO Luc Switten[2] and is majority-owned by the French private equity firm, IDI[3]. The Group, which generates over €60 million in annual revenue and employs approximately 400 staff, [4]is structured around three main divisions: Intersoft Electronics, Intersoft Services, and Advionics[5]

The Intersoft Electronics Group serves a global clientele, including Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), defense organizations, and radar manufacturers, and operates international offices across Europe[6][7][8], the United States[9], and Australia[10]. The Group states its mission is 'to make the sky safer,' which it pursues not only by developing advanced hardware and software tools but also by offering specialized training and knowledge transfer services aimed at supporting clients in the operation and performance optimization of their own ATC and CNS systems. [11][12]

History

The Intersoft Electronics Group was founded in 1983 as an engineering company in Olen, Belgium. The company's earliest activities involved the development of ground radar systems for detecting underground utilities.[11]

The company's focus on air traffic control began in 1991, when EUROCONTROL commissioned an Environment Simulator to support secondary radar systems. This contract was secured based on the company's prior technical competence in ground radar, which provided the necessary foundation for transitioning to air surveillance applications[11]. Following this transition, the company developed its suite of CNS Test Equipment throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including the RASS portfolio (Radar Analysis Support Systems).[13][14]

The deep technical and field experience gained from deploying RASS provided the expertise needed to enter the radar hardware market.[11] In the 2000s, the company began undertaking its first Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) projects, such as those for the Belgian Air Force, to extend the service life of legacy radar systems. This shift led to the development of proprietary modular technology.[15]

Core Activities and Products

The Intersoft Electronics Group operates across four primary core activities: Radar Technology, CNS Test Equipment, CNS Services, and Manufacturing. This model is aligned with the three divisions: Intersoft Electronics, Intersoft Services, and Advionics.[16]

Radar Technology

Intersoft Electronics develops modular radar subsystems for upgrades and integration projects.[17]

  • ASR-M (Airport Surveillance Radar Modules): A modular design for Airport Surveillance Radar that allows manufacturers to integrate a system intended to remain state-of-the-art throughout its lifetime. Its design addresses challenges such as windfarm mitigation and 4G/5G interference.[18][19][20]
  • NGSP (Next Generation System Platform): This is the platform used for radar upgrades. NGSP incorporates patented algorithms designed to address emerging challenges, including ground clutter cancellation and windfarm mitigation.[19][20]
  • Non-Rotating Array Technologies:
    • NORA (Non-Rotating Array): Antenna systems that provide advanced capabilities previously associated primarily with military radar systems to the civil radar market. The concept is based on a circular array, which is designed to maintain consistent performance across all scan angles.[20][21]
    • L-IESA: Non-rotating IFF (Identification Friend or Foe) antenna system designed for naval applications. It features electronic leveling capabilities to improve detection and volume coverage during ship movements.[19][22]

CNS Test Equipment

Intersoft Electronics provides tools for radar and navaids measurements.[23]

  • RASS (Radar Analysis Support System)[24]: A manufacturer-independent toolbox used for evaluating all elements of Primary Radar and Secondary Radar (PSR and SSR). Key RASS tools include:
    • RES (Radar Environment Simulators): Used for extensive radar testing of SSR/Mode-S systems, compliant with EUROCONTROL EMS 4.0.[25]
    • RTG (Radar Target Generator): Simulates targets at the RF level for PSR testing.[26]
  • SMS (Sensor Monitoring System): A scalable solution that centralizes data from an entire sensor network (including PSR, SSR, ADS-B, and MLAT) to enable proactive maintenance.[27][28]
  • SkyRF CNS Drone: A drone-based platform for measuring CNS systems in the far field. The platform is used for commissioning and maintenance of radar, ILS, DME, and VOR,[29] and is stated to reduce the need for test flights by 50%. Intersoft Electronics partnered with Skyguide for the development. [30]

CNS Services

The Intersoft Services division provides support for CNS and airport infrastructures.[31]

  • Service Areas: These include planning, integration, and maintenance activities for Air Traffic Control Systems. Specific services include Radar Services (e.g., Acceptance testing and diagnostics) and Navaids Services (e.g., certification and calibration of ILS, VOR, TACAN).[32]
  • IE Academy: The company operates a learning environment that offers courses and customized training on CNS systems and ATM.[33][12]

Manufacturing (Advionics)

The manufacturing division, Advionics, provides vertically integrated manufacturing of complex RF electronics. Advionics covers the total product life cycle, from product development and prototyping to production, maintenance, and obsolescence management. Capabilities include high-speed CNC milling, PCB and electronic assembly, and operating a dedicated cleanroom for producing miniature hybrid modules.[34][5]

Corporate Affairs

The company's leadership is currently composed of CEO Luc Switten. The Group was initially backed by the private equity firm Waterland. In a significant change in ownership, the French private equity firm IDI acquired a majority stake in the company in June 2025.[35]
