Interstate 685 (I-685) in Alabama is a planned future designation for a current section of I-85 in Montgomery. It is not signed as an Interstate Highway, but it is signed as SR 108. It is not fully operational as a distinct highway.

Route description

The purpose of I-685 is to designate the current alignment of I-85 through downtown Montgomery once a new southern bypass around the city is completed. This new bypass, often referred to as the Montgomery Outer Loop, is intended to carry the main I-85 traffic, allowing the existing I-85 route to be re-designated as I-685.

Essentially, I-685 will serve the function of the current I-85 route as it directly leads to I-65 in downtown Montgomery.

History

The concept of I-685 in Alabama is tied to the proposed Montgomery Outer Loop (SR 108). The idea is that if the Montgomery Outer Loop is fully constructed and I-85 is rerouted onto this new southern bypass, the existing section of I-85 through downtown Montgomery would then be renumbered as I-685. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) pre-approved the I-685 designation on October 30, 2010. This approval was contingent on the relocation of I-85.

Future

As of May 2025, the full Montgomery Outer Loop has not been completed, and therefore, I-685 has not been signed or formally designated in Alabama. While Alabama has permission to co-sign the current I-85 as I-685 until the new alignment is built, the state has chosen not to do so. The first segment of the Montgomery Outer Loop (SR 108), from Vaughn Road (SR 110) to I-85, opened in January 2016. However, further phases of the loop, which would extend it to US 231/US 82 near Pike Road and eventually to I-65 near Hope Hull, have faced stagnation due to a lack of funding.
