IntrigueCon is an annual gaming convention dedicated to roleplaying games. It is held in Edmonton, Canada on the first Friday following Canadian Thanksgiving and concluding on the following Sunday. As of 2017 it is still "Edmonton’s only convention dedicated to role-playing games"[1]
The convention’s schedule includes five four-hour one-shot roleplaying sessions and has featured collaborative Parsely games, and a swap meet.
History[edit]
IntrigueCon was created in 2013 by four Edmontonians[2], including local game designer Daniel Hodges [3] “to bring disparate (roleplaying) communities together".[4] In 2013 there was no event geared towards roleplayers in Edmonton which, at the time was supporting other specialized conventions such as Animethon, Pure Spec [5] and “with a population of about a million folks (in Edmonton), there was no reason we couldn’t have (a roleplaying event) here".[6]
Roleplaying, in general, happens in basements and... once you've got those three or four people around you could play together for 20 years and never meet anybody else.
Daniel Hodges (2016)[7]
The inaugural IntrigueCon was held at the Lansdowne Community League hall on Friday, October 18th, 2013. It ran for two days concluding on Saturday, October 19th, 2013. It had 31 attendees. The following year, Lansdowne Community League Hall was undergoing renovation and expansion,[8] so the 2014 event was held at the Brookside, Edmonton, Community League hall[9] before returning to Lansdowne for 2015 where the convention "expanded to a third full day, running all day Sunday as well".[10]
In 2016 the convention had outgrown Lansdowne and moved to the Parkdale/Cromdale Community Hall and, from there, to the Queen Alexandra Community Hall from 2017 onwards.
Community Support[edit]
IntrigueCon has focused on promoting local authors and designers wherever possible. It has also been supportive of game designers in general, and encouraging game masters to play test games.[11]
Other Events[edit]
In addition to the main IntrigueCon in Fall there have been two Spring cons: in 2014, and 2017.[12]
